Yanks Win
Yanks felt like grinding AB's after falling behind 4-0 in the first. And guess what? They ended up winning. They're championship teams have all been full of grinders. This year's team isn't and even features some ex-grinders. Weird, but the manager should take some heat for that. Anyway, big win, and McCann has continued to be an effective hitter every other game or so.

McCann has been really good since the beginning of July. I am now convinced that his issues were related to learning a new pitching staff, learning a new league, and settling in to the NY media glare.
I am more confident then at any point in this season, that he will be an improved player in 2015. Worth the $17 million per? No player is worth his salary. But they will reap benefits from the signing of McCann.
Now Beltran - I know about the bone spurs, but I am far from convinced he will be anything other than an albatross the next 2 seasons. Same with Tex. And CC. That is 60 million of "dead" money on the books for 2015 and 2016.
And this does not include whatever they decide to do with A-Rod. Worse case - he is another $20 million per of dead money, but for 3 seasons.
BTW - solid performance from the 'pen again. They have been a strength all season, for the most part. But lately they have been lights out.
And everyone is contributing, not just the big 2.
MBN's point about the pen is right on. I hope they keep Robertson because it will make it more likely that we will have a deeper pen next year. What they overspend on him can be saved by building up more pen arms from the farm. What is needed is arms that are capable of going more than an inning, including at least one bona fide long man who can take an extra inning game as far as it goes (perhaps Mitchell?).
Keeping Robertson is a must. They'd be stupid to weaken one of the team's few strengths — which is why I suspect they'll let him walk.
I believe that they will offer Robertson the qualifying offer. I hope that they negotiate a longer=term deal with him, but the QO will at least get the Yankees a comp pick. Which is not a fair value replacement, but overpaying for Robertson (like the Paplebon deal) would not be smart in any way.
There are a couple of guys in the upper levels of the system who are almost ready now, including 2 lefties (Wade and Lundgren). This does not mean let Robertson go, but at least be smart about it.
They should see if they can now trade McCann in the offseason.
I would be shocked if they keep Robertson.
But the two issues could be related. They have a ton of holes, a ton of payroll, and little flexibility for necessities.
So trade McCann because they have the depth to replace. That yields payroll room, another asset, and an opening for Murphy and Sanchez.
There are several calls in the NY sports media to sign Victor Martinez. Yes, he can hit, although he is having a career year by a lot, but he will be 36, so it would be more of the same. Now, if they want to send Beltran, Tex, and A-Rod packing and eat $60m a year for a few years, then sure.
The last thing we need is another DH. Our offense needs more baserunners, more 1st-3d speed, and fewer Ks and DPs.
If they don't resign Robertson, I fear they will feel the need to sign another front-line starter, meaning even more bucks invested in just part of the rotation. With Robertson, Betances, and a deep pen, you can play to win almost every day that your starter keeps you in the game going into the 7th.
We'd be wise to avoid any free agents that come with draft pick compensation.
No to Victor Martinez.
While he can hit, and would help as a backup to Tex for the (inevitable) injuries he will suffer next year, we can't afford another guy that DH is his best position.
Unless they are trading A-Rod, or getting rid of his salary, and I doubt either will happen unless he is to injured to play and the insurance money kicks in.
