This Week on The Blog

Okay, here we go.  Sorry I was so busy this week.  It'll probably stay that way, but I won't forget you. At least three of the teams should have things cooking this week.

Yankees:  Today was Derek Jeter Day.  Let's see if they can come back and win.   They sort of have to as they are still in playoff picture but really in need of a big winning streak.   We'll see if they let any of the kids play.

Giants:  The Giants make their season debut tomorrow night on MNF.     We'll talk more about that tomorrow.  Tuesday is the day they can start signing veterans to non-guaranteed contracts, and I expect them to replace some of their place holders at that point.

Rangers:  The Rangers have been doing their optional skates, but for the prospects this week should get more serious as they have some practices leading up to Traverse City.  The Rangers should also get  John Moore signed.

UPDATE:  Ryan Malone will be joining them in their informal workouts tomorrow.

Knicks:  They named some coaches this past week.  But this coming week, there will probably be more articles about JR Smith.  I have no idea why, but he's gotten a lot of press attention this summer.

Should be an exciting week, especially if the Giants win tomorrow.

My primary sports focus right now is on the New York Giants.

I think the Yankees will remain stuck in a period of mediocrity until the owners, Levine, and the overrated GM confront that reality head on.

Could be so.

Though, next season it will be exciting to start following the kids they signed in July.

Having said that. the three other teams could well use our interest till February, then June.

Should be a very interesting offseason for the Yanks.

As much as I would love for the Yankees to finally admit that they have to take a step back, and that they no longer need to make a win-now push because Mo and Jeter are gone, I am afraid that hey will let their pre-exisiting contracts trump reality.

So my guess is that they pretend that their offense will be fine because 1) McCann's splits since July 1st prove that he just needed time to adjust; 2) Beltran's elbow surgery will enable him to be the player they signed; 3) Prado can be an above average offensive 2B; and 4) A-Rod can return to being a 30 HR 3B (unless Bosch provides enough evidence for the Feds indict him, but it's not easy to prosecute someone with A-Rod's wealth, as we saw with Clemens).

Then if Tanaka makes a good start later this month, they can sell his return to prospective season tickets holders as well.

Maybe they hedge by signing Lester or Scherzer

Then they add a SS and they will claim that they can...wait for it...win the WS!

There is another issue that they may need to be addressed and I hope they are pro-active.

It would absolutely suck if Jeter buys an ownership interest in another team. Hal and Co. need to find a way to sell him some percentage (at fair market value, of course). I say this as someone who admires Jeter, and appreciates his tangibles (through 2009 he was an over 120 OPS+ SS!!!), but who isn't caught up in some of the over the top praise that he has received.

It's really just about good business. Jeter is nothing if not smart, and the brand that he has created is invaluable in baseball terms.

Bringing him aboard may make no on the field difference, at least short-term, but I think it will matter a lot over time, and the pie is more than big enough to get it done.

He's smart about his rep and privacy, but dumb about some baseball stuff, owed to being around Torre and Girardi so much.

There's truth to that, although when says that pitching wins I think it may be because he took great offense for granted.

Would you be ok with him owning part of another team, particularly one in their division?

I doubt the Steinbrenners let Jeter buy any sort of significant piece of the Yankees. And I doubt Derek wants to be a silent, minority owner. I am sure he wants a say in running the business, and I doubt the Yankee front office gives it to him.

You guys think that Jeter buys in with Michael in the Bobcats? I did not realize how tight they really are.

He should have a say. It's not being run well now.

ESPN New York 20m
RT @ESPNNYYankees: Girardi said Tanaka could be just one more sim game/rehab start away from making a start for the Yankees in late Septemb

In fact, I would make him the public face of the Yankees. Everyone else who speaks for them is either offensive or a clown or out of touch.
