All Three of the Yankees 2013 First Rounders Have All Made High A

With Ian Clarkin's start tonight, all of the Yankee first rounders from their 2013 draft bonanza have made it to Tampa.   Jagielo starter there and got hurt when he really started cooking.  Judge was promoted awhile ago and may be again before the season is out.  But Clarkin was a prep.  And not only that, he had an ankle last year and didn't really pitch after being drafted, then started this season in Extended Spring Training.  So him making it from EST to Tampa as a 19 year old is hot stuff.    The sky's the limit for him.    They could now travel through AA and AAA together, which would be pretty cool. Though I think Judge and Jags will probably make MLB first, unless Ian just flicks a switch, which he really has the talent to do.

This should be a lesson as to why it's important to stock up on first-round picks if at all possible. It increases the likelihood of hitting on one or several.

Exactly, and if they make the majors that's six years of control! Worth much more than some of the FA's we've signed at the expense of having our FA's.

Clarkin is the biggest surprise to me. He has the least experience of the trio, and he has missed a bit of development time with injuries since he was drafted.

Is he a candidate for the Fall League, to get his innings up a bit more? Not sure how the eligibility works.

They didn't learn the lesson because they failed at the transition from an overpriced team to one that can be fed with a pipeline.

Again, the opportunity to begin to use the pipeline is getting closer to reality.

Let's see what they do with it.

They actually have an advantage this year because they can re-sign Headley and Drew without giving up draft picks (although I don't think they will because of Prado...uh...and A-Rod).

The issue for them is probably going to be the rotation, unless Tanaka and Pineda finish the season both on the mound and productive.

I'd rather they just let Prado play out the remainder of his contract at third, since he's being paid starter money. That way, when his two years are up, one of Bichette or Jagielo should be ready.

I guess they have boxed themselves into that corner (no pun intended), although why they did is impossible for me to understand other than the one year plan crap.

Well, I suppose they could always re-sign Headley anyway and trade Prado as part of a package for something else they need. But Prado's contract allows more wiggle room for a Jagielo or Bichette call-up in the next couple of years, as Headley would likely demand at least a three-year contract.

I think Headley will actually get one of those 5 year deals, although it probably won't be for more than $60 million or so. So if the plan is to offer a 2 year deal, I doubt he would accept.

I would much rather pay Headley $11m for three than Prado $11m at any time.

I don't see five years as being possible given how bad he has been and his back issues.

He has the power to play 3B, so he fits better here. He is better defensively. And as long as the epidurals are available, he can probably be productive enough to be traded, especially if you think park effects will boost his stats.

Now, Robertson should have been slotted for Prado's money before either, and he if signs somewhere for close to $36m for 3, and the Yankees' pass, I will not be happy.

The Yankees farm system;

Greene and Betances in 2013 (not including Warren since he was up almost the entire 2012). Also, Whitney may be making a case for the long relief job in 2014 - sort of the way Warren was used in 2012.

Refsnyder and Lindgren in 2014?? Also, Murphy the full-time backup at Catcher??

That could be at least 4 guys making an impact in 2 years. That does not happen from a bottom-10 Farm System.

If Robertson has an offer of $36 million for 3, I think the Yankees jump at that. My fear is he gets a Papelbon type of deal, and since he's younger, it may be for more years and/or money per.

Something like 5 years/60 million, or 4 years/52 million. Not sure the Yankees take that, and I would not blame them.

There was only one way to find out, and they passed.
