The Break Arrives as The Deadline Approaches

With their win tonight, the Knicks head into the all-star break three games over .500. That's certainly a welcome change and progress is being made. Still, the trade deadline is just 7 days away, and they will have opportunities to make some moves. The Knicks could clearly use some help at the back-up point guard position and they could use another rebounder, though Mozgov is developing and it might be wise to just go with him. And then there is Carmelo. For years I have thought he was destined to be a Knick. I guess we'll see if if happens in the next week or so. Go Knicks!

Nothing to worry about. Carmelo still has a big say in this.

FWIW Broussard/Sheridan both think Melo will be a Knick...

It will happen. The issue is the price.

Via the Knick Blog:

Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni and Knicks president Donnie Walsh are understandably hesitant to give up too much of New York’s depth to get Melo, as Chris Sheridan spelled out Wednesday night in this piece, but one source well acquainted with both teams’ strategies echoes the rising notion that Walsh might have no choice if Knicks owner James Dolan takes a Melo-at-all-costs stance, as many observers anticipate. The source said: “Don’t forget Donnie is still trying to get a contract extension.” Translation: Getting Melo now, no matter what the cost, might be the clincher to get that extension.

I suspect that Dolan will force an overpay.

No one is more dangerous than an idiot who thinks he's smart because his father was successful.

Melo is supposedly going to meet with the Nets over all-star weekend,. This is like when Posada had lunch with the Mets - or said he would. Or was it Mo?

I think it was Po, Phil would you equate this to be
Bernie flirting w Sox , so he could get more from Yanks?

Rich I think you are right on the money re Dolan. Especially if Isiah is talking to him.... We could be looking at an overpay... It's really amazing all the diff stories you hear Hahn(whom I think is most plugged in) Sheridan Broussard Wojo Mannix all have their own spin

It will work.

At 5:57 PM, Blogger Rich said...

As long as they are going to overpay, they should do it now.

Turns out the Russian is sticking by his guns, and Carmelo was surprised to hear the rumor when he was on the radio out here, He has an agent, and I'm sure he has told the agent where he wants to go.

There seems to be conflicting reports on that.

Knicks assuming Nets are a real threat
23 m ago By Alan Hahn
Amid a flurry of conflicting reports that hit like a January snowstorm, the Knicks are operating under the assumption that the Nets return to the Carmelo Anthony sweepstakes is a very real threat to their plans to land the superstar before the Feb. 24 trade deadline, according to multiple sources.
A person with knowledge of the situation said there is still confidence that Anthony won't agree to anything with the Nets as long as the Knicks are still actively pursuing him. At this point Anthony holds the leverage of the contract extension, which the Nets would want as a condition of any deal they make. The Nuggets could threaten to hold onto him through the deadline if he doesn't accept what they feel is a more favorable deal with the Nets, which would then put Anthony in position to potentially lose millions as a free agent this offseason under a new collective bargaining agreement.
That would be a major risk for Denver to take because they could still wind up like the Cavaliers and Raptors and watch Anthony walk away for next to nothing in return.
So it appears like it will be a battle of wills, a game of chicken and of course the Nets should get involved here. They could wind up benefitting from a panic move by Anthony.
Or the Nuggets could benefit from the Knicks giving up more than they wanted to.

Supposedly the Nets have a deal subject to Melo's approval.

At 9:09 AM, Blogger Michael said...

Now it's up to Melo to reject.. As Phil has pointed out if he wanted to be a Net he would be already..

At 9:10 AM, Blogger Rich said...

There's one other factor.

If Denver tells him that they won't trade him to the Knicks, does he call their bluff and wait, or does the prospect of taking less money under a new CBA weaken his resolve?

IDK

I still don't believe the Nets stuff, and think the Knicks are only acting like they believe it to justify their overpay.

At 9:54 AM, Blogger Rich said...

So the issue is massive overpay or really massive overpay?

At 10:01 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Seems like that, unless he is willing to sign with the Nets, which would be like ARod going to Texas.

At 10:33 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Francesa said it's not about what they have to give up but the contracts of the players they'd have to take back.

At 10:52 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

That's interesting. Seems like they're trying to save room for a 3rd star.

At 10:56 AM, Blogger Rich said...

He thinks it's Billups, and thinks he won't fit the system. That's not as big a problem for me.

Not a big deal. I was thinking Harrington.
