Thanks, Andy

After a great career, Andy has made his decision and has decided to call it a day. There will be a lot of chatter about whether or not Andy was a Hall of Famer. To me it comes down to how deeply you are willing to look at the numbers. Andy's numbers were hurt by being a groundball pitcher in front of a lot of lousy defenses. Still, he managed to finish 100 games over .500, and his unadjusted Yankee ERA is under 4 and that was compiled pitching in a loaded AL East. We never should have let him go after 2003, because though he may not be a Hall of Famer, what he is is a Yankee, and he never should have had to wear another uni. Go forth and prosper, Andy!

Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com suspects that the Yankees might try to trade for Indians starter Fausto Carmona.
The Yanks have not publicly acknowledged having interest in Carmona and Indians GM Chris Antonetti said last week that the right-hander is not on the market. But the Yankees could certainly make a play for him if they are unwilling to unload a top prospect or two from their farm system. Carmona, 27, registered a cool 3.77 ERA and 1.31 WHIP across 31 starts last season. The Yanks are hustling now against the news of Andy Pettitte's retirement.

Carmona would be nice add depending on what we part with.

Yanks should stay away from Millwood at all costs.

Carmona's ERA+ over the last three seasons:

79,67,102

Garcia's ERA+ last season was 94.

There's likely not much of an upgrade with Carmona.

So no thanks. Be patient with the kids and wait for something much better.

Can't go with kids.

Look what happened in 2008 with Kennedy and Hughes..It didn't work unless you want to look at 2012 to make the playoffs again.

By your logic, you can't go with veterans either because AJ and Javy sucked last season.

All young pitchers are not the same.

AJ and Vazquez have also had good seasons as well.

So have Hughes and Kennedy, and both of them are likely to get better.

Who would you rather have on your team, Hughes or AJ or Vazquez?

The Yankees, who heard this week that Andy Pettitte will retire, have considered exploring trades for other left-handers, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter). Joe Saunders, Scott Kazmir, Wade LeBlanc, Clayton Richard and Gio Gonzalez are among the possible targets some Yankees people have "kicked around."

Well Joba has put on weight (he calls it muscle).

Enjoy SWB!

At 5:50 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Have you seen him? If not, why don't you believe him?

At 6:14 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Right now, I'm just interested in his work with Rothschild.

At 6:38 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I believe Joba and I believe in Joba.

Joba needs to have a good ST since he doesn't have a defined role on this club.

Otherwise, I believe he will find himself in SWB.

In other news...Twins could make Liriano available.

Considering that Joba is out of option years and would have to pass through waivers in order to be sent down, I think your belief is unsupportable.

At 2:17 PM, Blogger MikeK said...

Yankees should have sent him down to reconstruct his mechanics when they still had options. Lousy decision on their part. I simply refuse to believe that shoulder tendinitis has completely zapped him of that velocity.

At 4:43 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Joba will be traded after he strings together a few innings in ST in a package for a SP.

At 6:00 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I hope the Yankees are smarter than that.

At 6:36 PM, Blogger MikeK said...

Rich, this is the same team that flung him around between roles, panicked when a slight shoulder problem presented itself and failed to find his mechanical flaws when he stopped sitting 95-plus. Expecting them to be "smart" with Joba is expecting a bit too much at this point.

At 6:47 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I agree that they have mishandled Joba, but I don't think his shoulder problem was slight. If I had to guess, I suspect he has a small tear.

At 10:17 PM, Blogger MikeK said...

Is it possible to fix such a problem with surgery, or is a small tear too microscopic to handle? Have the Yankees even tried to locate such a tear?

At 10:42 PM, Blogger Rich said...

It's possible, but there's also a risk that surgery could make the problem worse, even if it's only arthroscopic.

Obviously, I could be wrong about the small tear, but they have called it tendinitis, and that's a catchall diagnosis. It encompasses a spectrum from inflammation to a small tear. MRIs aren't accurate enough to distinguish the difference, so they base treatment on symptoms.

Even if it is a small tear, the joint can get stronger over time. That's what happened to Wang (he did recover and perhaps the shoulder would have remained in tact but for the complications from the lisfranc injury). Maybe they think that Joba is less likely to exacerbate the problem as a reliever?

Again, I'm speculating, but I have had shoulder problems so I know a little about it.

At 9:49 AM, Blogger MikeK said...

Well, if he suddenly finds his old velocity, I hope the Yankees are smart enough to move him back to the rotation.

Yanks continue to talk to Millwood but have a ways to go per Joel Sherman.

Remind me again why this team didn't pursue Duscherer?

“Anybody who has [minor league] options is not a lock for anything,” Cashman said when asked by The Post if the 25-year-old was a roster-spot lock. “Any player with options has to re-earn everything. You earn more or you earn less — New York or Scranton [Triple-A]. I fully expect Joba to be in our bullpen. If not, he would have worked his way out of it.”

Joba has none.

At 3:21 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Cashman doesn't agree with you.

At 5:19 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I don't care, he doesn't.

At 5:37 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Maybe there is some exception to the rule. Either way, he isn't being sent down.

At 5:50 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So basically you are saying you know more than Cashman?

I know the NY Post is questionable at times but that was a quote from Cashman.

He will either be:

Traded

Mop up duty since he has lost his
8th inning role

Sent to SWB

I opt for SWB since his value is low right now NY would be taking a loss.

I am sure there is some kind of loophole where he has options left.

At 6:17 PM, Blogger Rich said...

No, basically I'm saying that this distinction is meaningless because he still has to clear waivers in order to be sent down because he has passed the third anniversary of his major league debut.

The NYP reporter wasn't smart enough to clarify the point.

So, he won't be sent down.
