Yanks Sign Jones

The Yanks have signed Andruw Jones to a one year deal for 2M. Once the greatest defensive CF of all time, he declined young, but is still a good corner fielder who pounds lefties. Marcus Thames with a glove. If he shows up in shape, he could still surprise. Go Yanks!

Good move. Hopefully he will come to camp in shape and cover all3 OF spots as a backup.

I don't like it.

Seems fine. Why are you opposed?

Too much boom/bust. In his three seasons prior to 2010, his OPS was below .800 against LH and RH pitching. I think he could tempt Girardi to sit Gardner and Granderson v. LHP; I think they need to play almost everyday.

I'm more concerned about the DH position, and wanted a well-rounded hitter irrespective of handedness.

I do like that they were open-minded enough to offer Pavano one year.

Would have preferred Damon or Manny, as Rich has suggested before.

Disagree on Pavano, I don't know what they were thinking. The guy clearly didn't want to pitch for the Yankees last time, why would they think it'd work out a second time? (Javier Vazquez.)

I wouldn't be surprised if Vaz has a good year this year;

That's just it, Mike. They needed a starter (they still do) and Pavano is the best one out there after Lee. So they have him a chance to prove that he can pitch here on a one year deal. To me, that revealed that he didn't want to risk failing here again. So it was in effect intended a test, and chose not to take it.

TB signed Damon and Manny. If only the Yankees were as well run. With their payroll, they would be unstoppable.

Damon is no longer a good fielder by any means and he wanted to be a starter and not come off the bench.

Manny is a head case who can't field and is a former roider. He wanted AB's and wouldn't get that with Posada here as the DH.

It will only be a matter of time before Maddon gets fed up with his shenanigans

Damon's UZR/150 has been positive in every season since 2007 except 2009.

Who cares about defense anyway? It's about offense/defense.

If you think that Manny would be a head case with A-Rod and Jeter around, you really need to rethink.

Face reality. The Rays are a better run team than the Yankees. The Yankees' saving grace is their payroll.

So who cares about defense anyway?? LOL Pitching and defense wins WS.

If this was 2004 then I would be afraid of the Rays with Damon and Manny!

Manny plays when he wants to play and that's a fact!

If it's about offense/defense than Thames would be here but because he is a butcher in the OF, the Yankees didn't want him back.

Jones FITS this club over guys like Manny and Damon who wanted to START.

So that's why the Braves of the '90s won all those rings.

Oh wait, they didn't.

Keep laughing.

Braves should have won more on paper but ran into hotter teams at the time.

At 8:00 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Because hot teams win. Sometimes it's due to offense, other times it's done due to pitching, and still other times it's due to both.

Yanks sign Colon.

As long as they also sign Duscherer, I'm OK with the move.

I find these quotes disturbing:

"Those people are stupid,'' Cashman said of critics of the Yankees' handling of Chamberlain. "It's just an easy, stupid, idiotic thing to say. There's no screwing anything up. That's how Andy Pettitte came in, that's how guys have been broken in for years. They're starters in the minor leagues, they come up and we use them in the 'pen, and eventually they break into the rotation. So what's the problem? I just think it's naïve."

Source.

Surely Cashman isn't trying to pass off that farce of an audition as proof that he "had his chance."

Freddy Garcia prefers to sign with the Yankees.

Bring in Garcia and Duchsherer and let them fight it out in ST.

Unless he can be had for dirt cheap, I hope the Yankees prefer not to sign Garcia and just take Duscherer and run.

Yanks out on Duchsherer.
