How `Bout Them Knicks?

The Knicks took an excellent Spurs team behind the woodshed last night at the Garden. Wow. That was an impressive win, and it wasn't just Amar'e. Wilson Chandler continued to breakout and Raymond Felton nailed shots in the second half that he wasn't making in some of those December losses. They decimated the Spurs' zone and made them play at the Knicks' pace. The Knicks should really consider standing pat and looking for help in the D-league if the team continues to gel as it has been doing. Coach D'Antoni is once again showing he is one of the best and most innovative coaches in the league. And Donnie Walsh hasn't done anything nutty since the `09 draft. Go Knicks!

I saw an interesting article linked at The Knicks Blog to the effect that the issue isn't just trading for Melo v. adding Melo to the existing group, because Chandler will likely make about $10m next season, so if you want to add Melo via free agency, you have to subtract some other players to have room, maybe including Gallo.

You can understand why D’Antoni winces whenever someone brings up trade rumors involving Carmelo Anthony. As much as the Knicks would love to add Anthony to their mix, as each game passes, the idea of including Chandler in a trade with the Nuggets – who, according to a person with knowledge of the situation, are quite fond of him – is met with stronger resistance.

There remains another caveat: Chandler will be a restricted free agent this summer and will need a contract, too. It will take some creative bookkeeping, but the plan is to carve out enough room to have the ability to sign Anthony and also re-sign Chandler.

“As I have reported before, the Nets will not do any ‘Melo deal unless they are assured that he will sign the extension,” wrote Sheridan. “And Melo is sticking to his guns that he will not sign an extension with any team, if traded, unless that team is the Knicks. That has been the case for more than a month, and it remains the case as of this very moment.”

Seems like a poker game. Meanwhile, they were very impressive last night.
