Yanks Re-Up Jeter

The manufactured drama of the inevitable is over. Jeter will retire as a Yank as he has earned the right to do. Terms shouldn't effect any other business over the life of the deal. Now go get Lee!

I'll await the final numbers before I comment on their negotiating skill or lack thereof.

At 12:14 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Rich, it's been in every projection they've done for years. It was always going to happen.

At 12:32 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Phil more and more people think Crawford is not smoke, what do you think?

At 12:33 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I don't see it happening without trading Granderson or Gardy. I'm not in favor of it.

Btw, we now know why BA and other were hyping Casey Kelly for the last year.

Phil

That doesn't make it a smart contract for a player with his stats in 2008 and 2010.

What if his 2010 stats are indicative of what he has left?

At 12:42 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Phil if Swish were dealt would you then be in favor of it? I just get the sense that we could see the CC/Tex/AJ scenario again... Not saying it is going to happen but would not be shocked if it does

At 12:43 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Dealing Gardner doesn't help because he makes no money.

I'd rather sign Werth than Crawford.

At 12:47 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Werth is a better hitter but his career arc and expanding chin make his success a little suspicious. Other than that, the HGH has made him a legitimately great hitter.

At 12:50 PM, Blogger Rich said...

They can use calipers on his head in the physical...

At 1:25 PM, Blogger MikeK said...

Keep the outfield as it is, sign Lee, re-sign Pettitte and add some parts to the bench and bullpen. The team needs tweaking, not a major overhaul.

I'm OK with the Jeter deal as long as the limit of guaranteed years is three.

At 1:27 PM, Blogger MikeK said...

I'm not liking the sound of a "tricky" option. It better be tricky in the sense that it's extremely tricky to trigger...

At 1:33 PM, Blogger Rich said...

What they really is 3B/SS depth that can hit as well as field to prolong/guard against a decline of the aging left side of the INF, which is this team's biggest vulnerability.

At 5:57 PM, Blogger MikeK said...

A player option. LOL. Nice work Yankees. Now switch gears and get that seven- to eight-year deal ready for Cliff Lee.

At 10:05 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Hank and Hal are not very smart.

At 4:43 AM, Blogger John in Lakeland Fl. said...

What is it with Lupica? Did George piss in his Cheerio's? Why does he have such hatred for the organization?

At 6:33 AM, Blogger Rich said...

It's been so long that I read him, John, I can't comment.

After some reflection:

This is one goofy freakin' contract. In some ways, it would have been better to just give him $60m over three years, but both sides seem to have been intent on saving face. Unless Jeter finds Bonds' fountain of youth, many of the incentives contained in the fourth year options are likely unreachable.

At 8:12 AM, Blogger MikeK said...

It really is sad how truly horrible this team is at negotiations. How much more money could it spend on the draft and IFA if the front office wouldn't constantly bid against themselves? Not to mention roster flexibility.

At 2:30 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Werth 7 for 126 to the Nats???? talk about overpay...

At 6:59 PM, Blogger Michael said...

there is a report out there Lee says he will go back to Texas if they offer a 6th year? Tim Brown from Yahoo posted on twitter

Well, that all but guarantees the Yankees will give him a seventh year.

At 4:39 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Looks like Pettite is leaning towards retirement according to reports.

Perhaps this will free up salary to land Crawford and then flip Swisher for a SP.

At 7:08 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Go Knicks.

At 1:32 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Lee should get done soon.

At 2:28 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Phil you like Feliciano for the pen?

At 2:31 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Generally I favor growing your own pen, since you're almost always going to overpay for an outside reliever.

At 2:57 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Fair point, and besides the fact I commend Cash for staying away from Downs as we should hold onto the pick. Seems like Lee and back-up catcher are Cash's primary order of biz. I would also be curious what trades Cash could potentially make.... Considering that next year's FA are not so great, ala the year after Tex, if the number is right would you expect Cash to swoop in for Crawford, then perhaps flip Swisher for another Pitcher given Andy is reportedly going to retire?

At 3:03 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Still not interested in Crawford and we have Nova and others for the back end of the rotation. The farm has gained tremendous strength this year and will continue to do so. So the trade market may become more of a Yankee acquisition route going forward than weak FA classes.

At 5:03 PM, Blogger Michael said...

To further your point Phil, Swish was gotten in basically a salary dump and I would say has yielded positive results so far minus the post-seasons. I would agree what was once a weakness with the farm has now become a strength thanks to Cash and company..

At 5:28 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Swisher may have Cash's best pure trade, top two or three anyway.

At 10:26 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yanks in on Crawford.

Hope they get him.

At 11:47 AM, Blogger MikeK said...

Only if it means Granderson is the odd man out.

At 7:32 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yanks have made a 6/140 offer to Lee.

Lets see if it is enough for him.

At 8:46 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Boston got Crawford 7 for 142

At 3:47 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Gross overpay on Crawford.

They do have a deadly lineup.

At 8:08 AM, Blogger MikeK said...

The Yankees have reportedly upped the bid to seven years on Lee. I'm against a seventh year, but if that's what it takes to keep from gutting the farm system in a trade for a starter, I'll politely refuse to complain.

At 9:19 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Wake me when it's over.

At 10:42 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

We should know soon.

At 6:04 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Texas has a press conf scheduled...

Why do I have a bad feeling about Lee not signing with the Yankees?

Yanks have made an offer to Martin to be their starting catcher.

At 6:41 PM, Blogger Michael said...

turned out that they just said they made an offer and Lee was deciding

At 8:51 PM, Blogger MikeK said...

Phil, what's your take on Russell Martin being offered the "starting catcher position"?

At 9:06 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Not that you asked, but my take is that the offer is almost irrelevant.

There will still be a competition, and I never thought that Montero would catch more than 80 games.

They don't want Po to catch anymore and Cervelli sucks.

If Martin is healthy, he'll play. If not, or he isn't good, again, the offer is irrelevant.

At 9:57 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

What they tell him now is irrelevant. He'll be part of a catching rotation until Jesus is ready to play fulltime.

At 10:47 AM, Blogger Michael said...

Phil you confident Lee will be a Yankee?

At 10:48 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I would expect him to be.

At 2:35 PM, Blogger Matt said...

i hope they aren't pushing hard for martin so that they can trade montero for pitching. that would... suck.

At 3:51 PM, Blogger MikeK said...

I think he's staying with Texas... and the more that I think about it, the more I'm OK with it. Seven years is way too many for a 32-year-old.

At 4:20 PM, Blogger MikeK said...

Matt, I suspect that's exactly what they're doing, unfortunately.

At 5:43 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So what is plan B?

I pray Pettite comes back...

CC
Huhges
Pettite
Burnett
Nova

At 6:05 PM, Blogger MikeK said...

The M's won't be competing in the forseeable, so see if they'd be interested in some prospects for King Felix.

At 8:12 PM, Blogger Rich said...

How does Martin enable them to trade Montero? It's not like you can count on him to be good, nor can count on Posada being a sufficient bat at DH.

At 11:16 PM, Blogger MikeK said...

There are several players on the Yankees' roster that will need to DH regularly. Posada, A-Rod, Jeter, sometimes Teix and Swisher. Po can still catch probably 40 to 60 games if need be.

The Yankees have tried to trade Montero not once, but twice. If Lee signs with Texas, he's gone.

At 11:28 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Cash's has said that Po isn't in the mix at catcher and that he isn't guaranteed to stick at DH.

As much as I like him, his willingness to trade Montero sickens me.

Jeter doesn't hit enough to DH.

At 12:04 AM, Blogger MikeK said...

I don't like it either, but I believe the Yankees view him as a player without a position. Consequently, they're OK to trade him if it's for a top-tier player.

I'll say this, if the M's would do Montero, Betances, plus B prospects for King Felix, I'd do that trade in a heartbeat.

At 6:22 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why would King Felix be available?

He is cheap, young and injury free.

Johnson with the Marlins could be on the block or call Twins about Liriano.

Greinke is another of course but no matter what...Cashman would be RAPED in any deal.

At 9:44 AM, Blogger MikeK said...

Because the M's won't be competing anytime soon. It's worth a shot. I'd also check on JJ, but I'd stay away from Liriano unless he's cheap, and I would touch Grinke at all.

At 10:09 AM, Blogger Rich said...

I think there is about as much chance of Felix being traded as AJ.

At 11:05 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Think more in the lines of Derek Lowe.

Maybe the White Sox could make one of their SP available.

At 12:05 PM, Blogger MikeK said...

If it's not for a top-tier ace (that wouldn't have issues with the spotlight, I.E. Greinke), the Yankees are better off letting the farm system supply starters.

At 12:06 PM, Blogger MikeK said...

Should clarify, that's assuming the Yankees don't trade any blue chippers away.

At 12:08 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I still think we're getting Lee.

At 12:22 PM, Blogger MikeK said...

I don't, at least I hope not. Not at seven years. Look at how bad the A.J. Burnett deal looks in hindsight -- he signed at 32, and it was only for five years.

Yankees need to stop doing "whatever it takes." And they need to stop bidding against themselves, a la Jeter. No way should they have moved from the initial three-year, $15 million per year offer.

At 12:24 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Lee and AJ are two entirely different cases. The only thing they have in common as pitchers is Arkansas. Control lefties LAST.

At 5:22 PM, Blogger MikeK said...

I prefer getting younger and cheaper, and I would mind trading a blue-chipper or two to do that.

At 6:47 AM, Blogger Rich said...

The only place they are vulnerable as a result of age/expense and don't have much high quality depth if there is a problem (Nunez/Laird are huge question marks) is at SS/3B.

At 8:39 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

White Sox will listen to offers on Buerhle who is a FA after 2011.

31 years old
LHP
AL proven veteran

At 8:52 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Coming off a 102 ERA+ season and has to be priced as a one year rental.

Maybe Texas should pursue him.

We will have an answer sometime tomorrow.
