Cliff Lee to the Yanks?

There was obviously a disturbance in the Force. Something woke me up and had me check sports. Joel Sherman is reporting that the Yanks are about to get Cliff Lee from Seattle for a package that include C Jesus Montero, 2B David Adams and either P Ivan Nova or P Hector Noesi. I was hoping they could get it done with Romine and a better pitcher. This violates the Cashman Doctrine of never paying twice (prospects and extension) but I'm not going to kill them for it. Lee is an elite pitcher who wants to play for the Yankees and is in his prime. As I mentioned a few weeks ago, when I first got the feeling that the Yanks might do this sooner rather than wait for the offseason, this mostly about our post season rotation and winning #28.

I think the reason there are a few reasons they were willing to give up Montero, and it has to do with the market for Lee. The Twins and Rangers were apparently deeply involved in the trade talks, and if either one of them got Lee, the Yanks might have been cooked in the division series this year. So they had to beat at least two possible opponents and that's why they played Montero. I was really hoping they could get it done with Romine and better pitchers, that apparently wasn't going to make it happen. Also, though I believe Montero is already a big league average defensive catcher, he doesn't really project to any other positions but 1B (Teixeira) and DH (a host of aging players going forward). Romine does look like he'll be a solid catcher, and of course Gary Sanchez, who is destroying the GCL looks like he's going to be a whole lot better. It's hard to project GCL kids, but they didn't give him 3M because they thought he can't play.

So it looks like it's bye bye Montero. This plays into another saying and that's that, "You always pay more at the deadline." Still, Cliff Lee is one of the difference making players you have to be willing to trade top prospects for. David Adams is a very good 2B prospect, who is organizationally blocked and was going to be used in a trade at some point. Nova and Noesi are probably relievers in the bigs.

Now what? The Yanks have too many starting pitchers, and as I speculated when I brought this subject up awhile ago, Javy Vazquez or AJ Burnett are now the best pitchers available on the trade market. Cash should be able to get good prospects or maybe even prospects and a power bat for one of them. In a related note, Nick Johnson had setback this week, and they might be looking for a DH type to help them get # 28.

Overall, I'm not happy to see Montero go, but I understand there was competition for Lee and it was competition we might have to face in the division series, and we do still have Romine, Murphy, Sanchez and others. And Cliff Lee is absolutely one of the best pitchers in baseball, he wants to be a Yankee and will help us win playoff series and hopefully championships.

WFAN in NY is saying its a done deal.

Sherman is saying it's close.

Woo Hoo!

Lee could be pitching tonight AGAINST the Mariners!

btw, I don't believe that they are offering Montero.

Olney (per ESPN 1050): “Deal is just about done.”

Hearing there's a "snag" in the #Yankees-#Mariners talks for Lee, but could just be hiccup. #Yankees are still hopeful they can finish it.

More Olney via Twitter: The Yankees told the Mariners overnight that their current offer is their last and best offer for Lee. They expect a yes or no soon, because Lee is scheduled to pitch against them tonight. “There has to be an answer before the game,” says 1 source.

#Mariners have told many interested teams that they're out of the Lee sweepstakes. All signs point to #Yankees completing this deal.

I would hate this trade. Hate it.

I hope this means the Yankees view Austin Romine as a plus catcher as he continues to develop. That would make this loss easier to swallow.

I suspect that if this trade goes through, it will likely be reported that the Mariners wanted Romine over Montero, but the Yankees refused to part with him.

Doubt it, Rich. Everyone knows Montero is the better of the two prospects, no need to pretend he isn't.

Any chance we can keep Vazquez and deal A.J. Burnett?

Mike

They will say they didn't think he would stick as a catcher due to body type.

No.

I highly doubt it. They'll say they loved Montero, but catching was a strength in the system, and Lee was good enough to justify trading him.

I understand why you don't like the deal, but I project Romine to be a Brian McCann type, so I'm not going to kill Cashman and co. for it.

I don't see how one can justify trading Montero for a three month rental of Lee. I don't even think Cash is setting the agenda if this trade goes down.

I would have far preferred we trade Romine, as I mentioned when I discussed this possibility at the end of June. Romine, I guess becomes the bridge to Sanchez.

With Sanchez in the system, I'm more worried about who replaces A-Rod at third in the long run.

jorgearangure: Don't underestimate NY09 signing of C Gary Sanchez on decision to trade Montero. Sanchez better athlete and could be just as good a hitter

Replacing A-Rod and Jeter is all the more reason why you don't trade Montero for a marginal pitching upgrade.

At 10:42 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I think Sanchez has a lot to do with it.

At 10:49 AM, Blogger Rich said...

I don't understand the connection. If A-Rod or Jeter go down, Montero is the asset that would most likely bring back a credible replacement.

At 10:53 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

If ARod or Jeter go down soon, we're sort of screwed. Though long term, Sanchez can also play 3B.

At 10:58 AM, Blogger Rich said...

But the screwing could be mitigated, at least somewhat, by trading someone of Montero's caliber. IOW, it's a fallback option, the best one they currently have.

I'm not sure that Jeter isn't beginning a decline right now. His GB% is much, much higher than it's ever been.

At 11:25 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Who are you trading Montero for that is mitigating the screwing?

At 11:34 AM, Blogger Rich said...

No one right now. I would hold him (and most other prospects) in reserve in case something bad happens.

Their starting rotation is fine the way it is.

At 11:45 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Cliff Lee is a great pitcher, and if we're going to trade a great prospect, he's the type of player to do it for.

Gary Sanchez hit another GS today.

Hey Phil, this is a mistake, they will regret trading Jesus.

If they put a package with Romine and better pitching propsects, I still believe it is better than any other offer.

Cashman is making this trade out of fear of losing Lee to another contender, and you never make a trade for that reason. He is overpaying and he will regret it when Jesus is dominating with the Mariners.

Phil

That might be true if he was an impending FA and if their rotation wasn't already very good.

At 12:08 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Jason, I'm not into trading "real Yankees" like Montero, either. I would much rather he build a deal around Romine, but apparently he couldn't.

At 12:08 PM, Blogger Rich said...

*wasn't*

At 12:48 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Francesa: Deal off. Physical issues with Adams, and another team has come in with a better offer.

At 12:50 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I hope it's not the Rays. And I hope Cash doesn't feel like he has to trade Montero now.

We will get him anyway in the winter imo...
