Yanks Go Obscure in Round 1

Wow. The Yanks just took Cito Culver a SS from Irondequoit HS in Rochester, NY. Nobody was talking about this guy. In fact there are no good pictures of him anywhere. Furthermore, I've seen him listed anywhere from 5'11" to 6'2". But here's the skinny, he's a switch hitting shortstop with a great arm. They say the game comes easily to him, and therefore, as is the case with Robinson Cano, he gets knocked on effort sometimes. I can't really criticize the pick, because I don't know enough about him. I know we needed shortstops and he's a shortstop. If he's 6'2" I like him a lot better than if he's 5'11". 49 picks left. I hope I've heard of some of them. Go Yanks!

Either the Yankees' scouts are geniuses or incompetent. Either way, I hope they are judged for this several years down the road, one way or the other.

Very frustrating watching the Rays and Sox have strong drafts with guys that have actually been heard of. I want to have confidence in these guys, but after picks like Chris Smith and Jeremy Bleich, it's hard to. Ugh.

People thought the RS hit a HR with Hansen. I'm reserving judgment.

I don't really know how we can criticize a pick that we don't know about, but they apparently do. We certainly need shortstops in the organization.

I can at least take comfort in this pick, because it's not a high-upside pitcher that will eventually lose several mph off his fastball.

I'm reserving judgment as well. If he turns into a top shortstop, then our scouts should be rewarded. If he completely flops, they should all be fired. It's that simple. Curious to hear what Cashman says on this guy tomorrow.

Sounds like a really good kid. Hope they sign him fast and get him in some Rookie League games.

"So they drafted Ramiro Pena's replacement?"

Someone actually posted that.

Rich, post a response to that. Don't just look in. Though I posted his batting #'s in response.

Phil

If I ever post, I don't want to start out by calling out someone's ridiculous close mindedness.

I was just shocked that someone would say that. Maybe I shouldn't have been.

He used to be down on Hughes.

Post a link to a positive article then, there are a bunch. It would just be great to have you back.

Phil, is it true (as you posted on NYYFans) that the Yankees heard he wouldn't be around at 82?

Yes it is true. And it's also true that we have some good things planned for tomorrow.

Cool stuff. As always, thanks for all the info you provide. I'm excited about this kid... really hope he signs quickly.

It's the kind of pick that should cause people to get promotions or lose their job.

Agreed, Rich.

Phil, I believe I remember you saying we were also gonna be in on a Korean SS in the IFA. What was his name again, and is that still the Yankees' plan?

The Yanks had a bunch of their best people look at Culver, and he played on their area code team last summer. They also had him well above Lipka on their board. Sounds like a ringer.
