The Battle is Joined
After Phil Hughes pitched very well last night in his latest stint, Joba Chamberlain did the same today. In his outing, Hughes showed growing confidence in his change. For his part, Joba showed increased velocity and his knockout slider. I was unable to watch it, but listened and it sounded like he threw a few curveballs, too. Any, he gave up a bloop double that someone else might have caught, then a single for his only two hits and an earned run. Beyond that he K'd 4 and walked one, and got some grounders by jamming batters. Remember, last time out he was working on pitching inside and this time out he did a much better job. This is getting fun! Go Yanks!

All things being equal, I'm not sure the competition is real, but it's great to see some progress.
We'll see. It's just nice to seem them dominate in back to back appearances.
Joba for the 8th inning.
Hughes for the 5th spot.
Joba should be a starter, not a reliever.
Joba is way too inconsistent.
He needs a humbling experience and be sent down to AAA to get his act together.
Joba just needs to get his fastball speed back sitting mid- to upper-90s.
He and Hughes should both start.
Joba didn't have his good stuff last year. It would play no better in the pen. He has 4 pitches, and he should start.
Joba's 2009 season wasn't humbling?
Austin Jackson is every good defensively.
Sickels:
SICKELS: You have several impressive catchers in the system, Montero, Gary Sanchez, Austin Romine, Murphy. Was this a deliberate attempt to build depth at that position?
NEWMAN: No, it wasn't deliberate in that way. We do put a premium value on catchers, shortstops, and center fielders when we look for players, but specifically building up catching depth wasn't a concerted effort. Of course, it's worked out nicely because catching is such a valuable commodity.
I thought accumulating catchers was a deliberate strategy?
Rich,
it very clearly was. But I don't think they want to admit a strategy. Obviously we're gonna be going SS heavy starting soon.
How long is the extension the Yankees will give Jeter anticipated to be?
Happy Birthday Phil!!
HB, Phil
