Draft Weekend!

The first round of the NHL draft is tonight! The Rangers are sitting at #17 with some tradeable assets if they want to move up, and this might be a year to do just that. There are three to five top players then a flat area. If this was a football draft, I'd stay in the flat area, but in a sport like hockey, where fewer players play at a time, and many other players are under organizational control without being the roster, you have to go for "special" when you can. Tonight, they can. Go Rangers!

Van Reimssdyk wants to be a Ranger. We would have to trade up to 3 I think. Maloney said that Bonyton has to be a part of any package for the pick. Prucha/Montoya package could pique their interest I would think.

At 9:13 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

That's what I think is gonna happen.

At 9:20 AM, Blogger Michael said...

I could live with that. Seems like Kane is going 1 and Turris 2. Have you heard anything concrete? I have been hearing more on the Gomez front that we are prepared to pay him a nice sum.

At 9:21 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

No, but I too have heard Gomez is gonna get a big offer.

At 9:51 AM, Blogger Michael said...

Shanny is pushing Gomez real hard to come here. Supposedly they are really close. Shanny is selling him on the idea that he can be one of the missing pieces to something special, which I happen to agree with.

At 9:51 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I do too.

At 10:03 AM, Blogger Michael said...

Sharks just traded Toskala and Bell to Leafs for picks. I wonder if this means they will attempt to trade for Drury now as has been speculated. We cannot afford to let Gomez get away.

The NHL draft is a yawn for most of the country. They need the Rangers to make a splash to spur interest.

At 10:14 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

All i know is Rangers really want to get to the number 3 spot

At 10:14 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

That's what I know, too. Could be Prucha and Montoya.

At 10:18 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yea thats what im hearing

At 10:26 AM, Blogger Michael said...

I think it's worth it to get to the #3 spot for VR. Maloney knows better then anyone our system, and loves Montoya and Prucha. Is there anything to Edmonton wanting to trade for Gomez's rights? Last I heard they were looking at that as one option. I also have heard we are in the market for a top 4 d-man.

At 2:39 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Vokoun just got dealt for picks. I hope we are seriously taking offers for Montoya at the prices these teams are getting for goalies.

At 2:40 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Exactly. Now's the time to move Montoya.

At 2:48 PM, Blogger Michael said...

I think that the return for Montoya would be substantial. Henrik is the man for the next decade. The longer you wait the more Al's value decreases. Sather better not disappoint. I know there is alot of activity going on in Columbus now, I am hoping we are involved. Have not heard anything new since this this afternoon other then we were still trying to move up.

At 3:07 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Neither have I and neither has Dan.

At 3:12 PM, Blogger Michael said...

No news is good news?? We can hope.. Perhaps they will surprise us with something?

At 3:13 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I guess we'll see.

At 3:55 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Waiting on confirmation, but I have heard we have or are close to a new deal for Henrik..

At 4:50 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

looks like we're not making a splash.

At 4:55 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Trade up for the Russian!

At 5:05 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

There goes the Russian.

At 5:13 PM, Blogger Michael said...

I agree trade up for Cheraponov.

At 5:14 PM, Blogger Michael said...

I believe he is still on the board.

At 5:15 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

St Louis trades their pick to San Jose. for 13,44 and a 3rd in 2008.

At 5:21 PM, Blogger Michael said...

I think if we are going to move up it has to be within the next pick or so to have a shot at Cheraponov

At 5:22 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

we'll see.

At 5:29 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

There goes Sutter.

At 5:37 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Esposito still there..

At 5:37 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I'd rather take the Russian.

At 5:41 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

People are reaching all over.

At 5:47 PM, Blogger Michael said...

I agree they are reaching everywhere. Two more picks to go...

At 5:48 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

We're gonna get someone good.

At 5:51 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

1 more pick!

At 5:51 PM, Blogger Michael said...

I agree Cherapanov or Espo... I prefer Cher myself..

At 5:52 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I want Cherepanov.

At 5:54 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Minnesota's gonna screw us.

At 5:57 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

They take Gillies!

We have our pick!

At 5:57 PM, Blogger Michael said...

here we go

At 5:58 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Don't screw it up Sather!!

At 6:02 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

WE GOT HIM!

At 6:02 PM, Blogger Michael said...

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

At 6:09 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

hmmm, guys are still falling, I wonder if we can trade back into the first round.

At 6:27 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I think we're trying to get back in.

At 6:32 PM, Blogger Michael said...

What do you think would be the cost of getting back in round 1?

At 6:32 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I don't know.

At 6:33 PM, Blogger Michael said...

I am really happy so far with our draft. Could not have worked out better and we did not have to give up anything

At 6:34 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

There's a chance that we got the best player in the draft and we did it without trading up.

At 6:38 PM, Blogger Michael said...

If the Preds go in a full sell mode as Bob Mackenzie says, I'd love for us to make a run at Shea Weber, he would be perfect for our D!

At 6:39 PM, Blogger Michael said...

I agree, anytime you can get the best player and not give up any assets, its an excellent move. Now let's hope with those assets we saved we do not do anything stupid. Keep it up Slats, and bring us Gomez next weekend!!!

At 6:40 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

We have to have a really good rest of the draft.

At 6:43 PM, Blogger Michael said...

I agree. One pick does not make a draft, need to follow it up with a solid day 2. Nashville GM just confirmed what Mackenzie said they have to cut payroll...

At 6:57 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Great find!!!! I think we find a way to get him over here. The kid can play.

At 7:05 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Let's trade back in for the other Russian.

At 7:08 PM, Blogger Michael said...

I'd have liked to trade back in for Petrecki myself, but do not want us to overpay for anything. Tomorrow should even be more interesting..

At 7:09 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I wasn't a Petrecki fan.

At 7:11 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Had we traded back in for the other Russian I would have not been upset, was looking at it more to add D to the farm. I hope Baranka can stay healthy this season as he has potential to make it. By rights he should have last year as he outplayed a number of the vets we have in training camp and preseason.

At 7:12 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I was hoping we would trade one of our veteran D's to get back in and take the Russian.

At 7:17 PM, Blogger Michael said...

I wish it could have been Malik. I am holding out hope he wont be back this year, but more then likely he will. I think once his deal runs out he does not come back.

At 9:23 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Nylander turned down the Rangers generous offer.

At 4:10 AM, Blogger Michael said...

That's what I have been hearing all along is that Nylander has one foot out the door already. I was told the longer it goes the less likely he stays, which is panning out. I am expecting us to make a big run at Drury as well as Gomez come July 1.

At 8:23 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Big Goalie Antoine Lafleur was our second pick. The Russian power forward is in free fall.

At 8:27 AM, Blogger Michael said...

I wonder if we trade up for the Russian. I know we don't pick again for a bit... Not surprised on Nylander just means Drury is more in play now.

At 8:29 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I think the Russian might fall to us at 5.

It's also possible that we buy back in before our 5th rounder.

At 8:32 AM, Blogger Michael said...

I agree that he can fall and or I could see us buy back in using some existing assets ie one of our D..

At 8:44 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

pick 94 just got traded but I don't know to whom cause this coverage is so bad.

At 8:45 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Mayorov was picked with the pick which was acquired by CBJ.

Damn!

At 8:51 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Bunch of trades now, but no Ranger moves.

At 9:24 AM, Blogger Michael said...

Come on Glen!!

At 9:25 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

We need a good player here.

At 9:27 AM, Blogger Michael said...

Agreed big time. Supposedly Smyth to Flames is a done deal and Edmonton is rumored to make a splash

At 9:28 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I bet we go Euro here...

At 9:30 AM, Blogger Michael said...

I would not be surprised with that. Did you like our goalie pickup? I think besides Al we need depth especially considering if Al is dealt, which I have heard he is on the block for the right offer.

At 9:31 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I'm sure he's a very good goalie and it was a responsible if not a fun pick.

At 9:33 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Max Campbell, C.

At 9:34 AM, Blogger Michael said...

A decent pick imo

At 9:35 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I don't really know anything about him.

At 9:37 AM, Blogger Michael said...

seems decent enough here is a little more on him

Ottawa just got 4 picks.... Come on Glen wake up..

At 10:15 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I knew something was slowing down the draft.

168 NYR CARL HAGELIN 8/23/1988 SODERTALJE SE 5' 11" 176 SWE-JR. SODERTALJE JR. LW L

At 10:22 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

He's going to Michigan and is a "big scorer."

At 10:29 AM, Blogger Michael said...

I like the write ups I have read on our picks today so far. It's good to see that we are placing more emphasis on player drafting and development. That is where I think Renney is more useful, not so much behind the bench.

At 10:31 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I agree with that. I'd consider giving Renney Don Maloney's old job and bringing Schoeny up to coach.

At 10:43 AM, Blogger Michael said...

I like that idea. Gernander should be able to run Schoney's system with the Pack. Bourret is gonna be a real steal for us imo. I have seen him play a few times and he is very explosive. Ironically Atlanta picked him with the pick we traded to them. If we can get Anisimov here that will be an even bigger plus. We have some kids on the Pack as well as throughout the org that will help us

Seems to be another decent pick.

At 10:58 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

all offense and a goalie.

I think there are gonna be some good undrafteds.

At 11:01 AM, Blogger Michael said...

I think there will be, and we will sign quite a few. I wonder if we start to hear some trades after the draft ends..

At 11:03 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Mark Owuya, another goalie was undrafted, and I hope we sign him.

At 11:19 AM, Blogger Michael said...

I hope so too. I would think within the next couple of days we would begin to hear things if not at the end of this one. Latest I heard is looks like Nylander is gone...

At 11:20 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Yup, that's what I heard, too, so we're gonna need to C's.

At 11:23 AM, Blogger Michael said...

I think Drury comes into play more. provided he does not get dealt to SJ. If we just get Gomez, I expect us to get someone via the trade market. I have heard we are going to make big runs at both Gomez and Drury, and pay more to try and secure them. We also want a top 4 D, which I think we should talk to the Preds about Weber.

We will definitely add two centers, and I applaud Sather for not over-paying, taking into account Nylander's age. He will see how good he is without Jagr.

At 11:26 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I like Nylander, but he may be part of the waiting for the perfect shot instead of launching barrages of shots.

At 11:45 AM, Blogger Michael said...

I agree watching him can be frustrating at times. I do also think that Drury would be an upgrade.

At 11:56 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Let's see what they can land. I have a feeling that NYR is a big destination again, and we'll have to see how the cap can be worked.

At 12:31 PM, Blogger Michael said...

I agree with you that NYR is becoming a place where guys want to play. Making the playoffs two years in a row has helped. The fact we have a good young core on the big club and the minors is also a big plus. People notice how we have long term direction. Shanahan is also a big factor in helping solidify our image. Ozo will be gone as well as Kaspar. Nylander's money will help. I think there are moves that can be made cap wise to make things more feasible.

At 5:51 PM, Blogger Michael said...

I heard that Robert Lang maybe possible for 1 year, if Nylander as expected walks. Would be solid move as they played together in Pit. If he makes it to FA next yr I would suspect we will make a huge run at Thornton. Less then a week to go!!! Come on Slats!!!

At 5:53 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I'll start a new thread for Ranger trades and FA.

At 5:56 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Excellent!!
