Yanks Have Traded For Edwin Encarnacion

Holy crap, the Yanks have just traded for Edwin Encarnacion.  Thus they are not just adding two more righty power bats this week, they are adding 3.  This is crazy, so it must have been a deal that Cash could not turn down.  EE is like 300 years old (okay, he's 36)  but he's still among the league leaders in homers.  Wow.  Hope it was a bargain.

Update: It looks like Juan Then went the other way.  With Judge and Stanton coming back to play the corners, I wonder what this means for Frazier?

Update 2: This might be just one part of a larger 3 team deal.

Hold onto your butts, folks. The Yankees are about to send Frazier and Estrada for a Brian Cashman starting pitcher acquisition.

This is gonna suck.

If they had a credible rotation, they wouldn’t have made this trade. Cashman is shitting bricks. He will now trade youth to cover yet another failure. But Gardner will continue to play and they will extend Didi. They have won 3 less WS than the RS sincere ‘04 for a reason: Teflon Cashman.

Cashman is going to rescue the team from himself.

Guy is leading the league in HR's. I will take him.

Good move.

Perhaps Torres or LeMahiue go to 3B with Voit at 1B and Encarnacian at DH.

I think they can only trade Frazier to an AL team because he's such a terrible fielder. And I think they can only trade him for a controlled ACE type. Btw, it is not Cashman's fault that Sevy has been out all year and everyone else has been in and out and up and down, or that Montgomery has been out out with his TJ's for over a year - could be back in August. Yanks just picked 40 more guys younger than Frazier and on July 2 they will sign even more yout, one of who has a higher ceiling than Clint's was even before his defensice shortcomings were apparent.

Whatever. I see a GM that has no strategy, only tactics to cover his ass.

As for Sevy: 1) no one has any idea if he is ever going to be the first half version again over a full season, let alone many seasons; 2) somehow their crack training team had two players injure lats while rehabbing shoulders.

I don't this is CYS stuff, this is being able to deal with whatever comes up. They were looking for more starting pitching during the entire offseason and getting Paxton was the only thing that made sense. And tney wanted more, but couldn't find prices that worked, so they brought back Happ and CC. Happ was good down the stretch for them, and there was no reason to expect he wouldn't be again.

And guys with hundred mph fastballs, wipeout sliders and swing and miss changeups always have a chance of coming back when they're in their early 20s.

Frazier optioned for Encarnacian.

Right move for the team. Frazier needs to play everyday

Frazier needs to learn to play defense. This is good for him. The rest of his game, except ruunning to first, has been growing.

Sending down Frazier instead of Tauchman is not a decision based on merit. Neither is continuing to have Cessa, Holder and Green in your bullpen over guys like Tarpley and Adams who deserve a shot. (Just wait until Cortes gets sent back down after the number crunches become tighter.) Heck, wait until they're forced to DFA Maybin in order to keep Gardner around because they foolishly committed $9M to him this offseason.

Agreed 100% on Frazier.

He has a solid arm and has the ability to be a good OF'er.

And let me just say, if this is intended to "send a message" to the guy because he didn't talk to the media that one time, what kind of message does it send when several of their bullpen arms continue to play the role of Run Fairy and are never replaced by guys in AAA who deserve a shot?

I don't think it's about the media. I think it's about the game he gave away to Boston because he has a hole in his glove. I don't think they care too much that he's a baby with the press, I think they care that he is a horrible defensive player.

Has his defense cost them since that game? (Honest question, as I haven't been able to watch live.) I get sending him down when Stanton is ready. I don't get doing it instead of Tauchmann when he's proven to be the superior player. This reeks of it being something they've wanted to do since that one episode.

Tauchman can be trusted in the OF. Also, Frazier dogged his way to first on what turned out the be a GIDP yesterday. He's a good hitter, possibly great someday, but he's bad at everything else.

Mike, not trying to be too critical here but are you watching the games? The idea of sending down Green, Holder or Cessa for Tarpley or Adams is wild. Maybe Cessa but he's here as a long reliever but Green & Holder have been good.

I also don't understand the cynical view of Cashman making a bad trade. When was the last time he was burned for any player? Voit for nothing, Hicks for nothing, Paxton for nothing, Gray for nothing, Happ for nothing... do I keep going?

Did Gray turn out alright? No but he was a good acquisition at the time. Paxton has been lights out 70% of the time and he's battling a knee injury. He's an ace / 2 when healthy and overpowering.

Not able to watch games unfortunately, but here are those three's respective ERAs: Jonathan Holder, 5.08; Luis Cessa, 6.10; Chad Green 7.54. None of that constitutes good in my book, though it's worth noting Green has had some success as a starter (3.52 ERA as an opener) as well as during the last month in general (1.59 ERA over the last 28 days). I'd be fine giving him a little more rope, but Tarpley has been pitching very well in Triple-A this season. You don't think he do a better job as the mopup guy than Cessa?

The reason they won't let Cessa go isn't because he's performed well but because he's out of options. So when the numbers crunch gets tighter it's likely Cortes who gets sent down instead of Cessa despite Cortes deserving a shot to show more. Given the increasing likelihood of Chapman opting out after this season, I would much prefer Tarpley handle the garbage innings and get his feet wet in the majors than Cessa or Holder. I also wouldn't mind Adams getting a shot unless they want to keep him stretched out as a starter, which is fair.

Also, the issue isn't Cashman making a trade, it's him acquiring starting pitchers specifically. When was the last time he was able to construct a championship-caliber rotation? Even in '09 they didn't have much beyond CC, Burnett and Pettitte and were fortunate to face a postseason schedule that allowed them to only need three starters. He signed JA Happ to $17M a year instead of Charlie Morton and once again used CC as a crutch instead of actually upgrading his position in the rotation. Paxton was a good trade but that "when healthy" part is key. He's never pitched 200 innings during any season, which is why he should have been viewed as more a No. 4/5 instead of the No. 2 they want him to be.

I don't like the idea of Frazier+ going for Madison Bumgarner (past his prime) or Marcus Strohman (good not great pitcher who may or may not be able to handle NYC and would require sending Frazier to a divisional foe). He's worth more than those guys as part of a package.

We can't be prospect huggers like we are, and complain about pitching acquisitions. We didn't get Sale because we wouldn't destroy the farm. And we never, ever seem to get a top 10 pick, where we might be able to find a #1 type. So we've found a few in IFA, but Sevy and German are out, and all the other top of the rotation types are at AA or lower.

Frazier removed all but 2 pics in his Instagram account.

I’m not advocating for prospect hugging. I’m simply saying I don’t trust Cashman when it comes to acquiring starting pitching and don’t want to see a bat the caliber of Frazier’s sent for the next Sonny Gray.

He's always trying to get what he can with a specific package and NOT willing to blow up the farm for anyone, including Sale when he had the chance.
