That was quick. The Yanks have already signed their third round pick Jake Sanford - he of the power shows! Don't know what he got yet, so still don't see the plan.
“When you talk about Volpe, the names that our scouts and other scouts that I’ve talked to in other organizations always throw at you is, ‘This is (Alex) Bregman, this is Michael Young, this is Trevor Story when they were coming out at the same stage,’” Oppenheimer said Thursday in a conference call with Yankees beat writers. "So that seems to some of the things that people say and people think. I try not to make comparisons because I think guys are who they are. They’re their own each guy. That seems to be some of the stuff that I hear from the industry.”
They've been really good at finding hitters lately and I think exit velo and mechanics on top of the production numbers has helped them. For several years they were getting pretty good hitters, now they're getting potentially great hitters.
Remember Richie Allen? He had crazy bat speed, but his swing was basically level with adjustments for location. His exit velo would likely measure vey high.
I don’t think swinging upward is the best way to max exit velo.
By no means do I expect Keuchel to be the Keuchel of old for Atlanta. At best, he's an innings eater/No. 4-5 type. The problem is, yet again, the Yankees' inability to construct a championship-caliber rotation meant they needed an arm like that, and now instead of getting one for just money, they'll have to give up assets at the deadline for another solid-but-not-a-difference-maker starting pitcher who may or may not be able to handle the spotlight of NYC.
Here is the rotation as it stands now: •German — probably a bright future given his stuff, but he's hit a rough patch lately and likely wasn't as good as his fast start indicated. Plus, he's on an innings limit. •Tanaka — good pitcher, one of Cashman's best pitcher signings ever. Has been hurt by the juiced ball. Partial tear in his shoulder makes him a heightened injury risk. Playoff proven. •Paxton — great stuff, always hurt. He's the type you take a chance on as a No. 4 when your Nos. 1-3 are good and reliable. He's not the type you expect to be your No. 2 when he is incapable of staying off the IL. •Happ — doesn't have the stuff you need to get better offenses out in October. Can't be relied upon to consistently go past five innings. •Sabathia — same as Happ. Bum knee. •Severino — on the IL. Can't for sure say he's gonna be the ace he has shown in the past given how long he's spent being shut down this year. •Montgomery — fresh off TJS. Probably isn't anything more than a reliever this year with a chance to resume starting in 2020.
Two days after the conclusion of the 2019 MLB Draft, the New York Yankees have started signing their prospects. According to MLB.com, the Yankees signed Competitive Balance Round pick TJ Sikkema, a left-handed pitcher from Missouri. Per MLB.com, the Yankees signed Sikkema for the slot value of $1,952,300.
The other six picks the Yankees agreed to deals with were center fielder Jake Sanford (third round, No. 105 overall), left-hander Ken Waldichuk (fifth round, No. 165 overall), right-hander Zach Greene (eighth round, No. 255 overall), first baseman Spencer Henson (ninth round, No. 285 overall), right-hander Mitch Spence (10th round, No. 315 overall) and first baseman Jake Farrell (39th round, No. 1,185 overall). All of them signed for slot value except Greene, who signed for less, though the exact terms of his deal remain unknown.
Per James Wagner: Dellin Betances (shoulder) felt soreness when throwing earlier this week during his rehab and didn’t throw a recent side session, and is headed to NYC for more tests, per Aaron Boone.
Give him an incentive-laden deal this offseason to help him build back value.
And although this isn’t the reason, the idea that you could just give contracts to CC and Gardner when you’re not willing to smash any tax threshold so you don’t spend on what you need is a joke.
Leadership is nice but when you’re talking about seriously declining veterans, it’s not as important as talent.
Joel Sherman: #Yankees place Domingo German on IL with hip flexor injury. Their rotation is thinning. Would guess Chance Adams gets another opportunity off of strong recent work. But wonder if NYY regrets not stretching more for Keuchel.
I would make Frazier almost untouchable, at least if he is not traded for a position player. His offense has a chance to be elite and his patience seems the be increasing.
Aaron Judge is “ramping up” against a high velocity machine and performing arc runs today, Aaron Boone said. He could play in a @MiLB game this weekend.
Giancarlo Stanton is scheduled to play with @TampaTarpons tomorrow and Wednesday. He will have an off-day Thursday, then join @swbrailriders to continue his rehab.
MadBum is no longer TOR. Frazier has the ability to go up to the batter’s box and not let stuff like media circuses (granted, of his own creation), boo birds or fielding miscues affect him. That’s an important quality, especially in NYC. Giving that up without a true ace or elite bat coming back in return would be a mistake.
The rotation under Cashman is always a mess. Yes, pitchers are fragile, but he’s got $200 million to work with, more with international signings, and he’s had this money for years and years. Whatever.
True. The goal should have been making the rotation strong enough to where Tanaka and Paxton are your Nos. 4 and 5. That they're your Nos. 2 and 3 while they hope and pray Severino eventually returns and is dominant shows you just how poorly constructed the starting pitching staff is. Having a good bullpen helps, but even that has some dead weight that they insist on continuing to run out there despite no lead being safe when they do.
Yikes. He’s not hitting the ball hard and his expected stats are near the bottom of the league. Amazingly, his actual wOBA (.304) is higher than his xwOBA (.279). That means Gardner’s been fortunate to have a .228/.302/.443 line.
Off-topic, but the Knicks going to sign an injured Durant. Why else would every commentator on MSG’s 150 last night say they have to, he will fix the culture well he rehabs, and will be great in a year because his arms were hurt and he’s a shooter.
If you do even a little research on the net, players don’t come back from that even nearly hundred percent.

Boyd’s peripherals have certainly trended in the right direction this year. But there isn’t enough of a track record there to justify trading away outfield depth when all of your starting outfielders are injury-prone.

Continuing to play Morales is the stupidest thing I’ve seen them do in years. I mean WTF.
OT
The Nets apparently have gotten more caproom at the price of two first round picks.
If players would rather go there I can’t change it.
So I just hope the Knicks do the smart thing: no bad contracts and being patient.

So they think this guy has the hit tool.
In my opinion, the hyper-focus on exit velo and launch angle harm the pure hit tool.

Hicks is getting close.
You can hit it as hard as you want, but without some upward angle or super powered back spin from cutting the ball low - it's staying in the park.
So, again, I am forced to ask for the 4858204857th time, why is Chad Green on this roster?
Keuchel. They suck.
Estrada. Morons.
Keuchel to Braves so now they must trade for an arm. Bumgarner is the best available and SF needs OF help.
Frazier is their best chip once Stanton and /or Judge come back.

Cashman sucks at trading for SP.
It can’t be said enough because so many fans are blind to it.
It’s going take a lot more than Frazier to get a top starting pitcher. Be ready for Prospect pain. Didi should be included too though.
And Morales again. Crazy shit.

That’s premature until they know what this injury.
Is
Didi strong early. What pitcher can he bring back?
Gardner leading off. Dumb AF.
Need Stanton and Judge asap
CC can lose it so quick and no human nor analytics can see it before or happens. Like Gardner, although better, not worth the claimed benefit.
Holder isn’t good enough to keep.
So replace him with Adams.
Now an extended slump.
If the Yankees had Tampa Bay’s rotation and a couple of its relievers they would be the odds-on favorite to win the AL pennant.
They can’t execute at Tampa Bay’s level. I wish it were otherwise but it’s an unavoidable fact.
And although this isn’t the reason, the idea that you could just give contracts to CC and Gardner when you’re not willing to smash any tax threshold so you don’t spend on what you need is a joke.

Nope, money matters more
Really happy for Tarpley getting the 3-K save. He should be the low-leverage reliever, not Cessa.
Great job. Frazier was huge.
Someone elsewhere made a good point. They brought in a very rusty Didi for defense and got burned.
I would make Frazier almost untouchable, at least if he is not traded for a position player. His offense has a chance to be elite and his patience seems the be increasing.
I’m sure I hold a minority view.
Best to Ortiz. Target in their home country. Really messed up.
Hopefully Frazier continues to hit and not play any defense to increase his trade value.
I can see him in SF as they could use the OF help as Judge and Stanton inch closer to their return.
Frazier isn’t worth giving up for a past-his-prime MadBum, especially when you consider how Hicks, Judge and Stanton are all injury-prone.
He’s a contrary indicator.
Again, what trades have Cashman made for top of the rotation starters that worked in 20 years?
Aaron Judge is “ramping up” against a high velocity machine and performing arc runs today, Aaron Boone said. He could play in a
@MiLB
game this weekend.
It’s still horrible, but Poppy may have gotten sloppy with a druglord’s wife
NJ.com: David Ortiz shot: Was ex-Red Sox slugger having an affair with the wife of a jealous drug lord? ( The source is the daily mail)

Cashman is now in CYA mode on Keuchel.

...signing for $2.74 million, according to YES Network, slightly above the slot value of $2.365 million.
So I was wrong, I thought he sounded like an under slot type.
They are never taking Morales out of the lineup now ...
Betances is their 2nd pitcher to sustain a lat strain while rehabbing a shoulder
If Paxton isn’t good, just acquire more relievers and use openers
Paxton is clearly hurt. Adams can be in the rotation, Tanaka, CC, Happ. Is there anyone else ready in the minor leagues?
The rotation under Cashman is always a mess. Yes, pitchers are fragile, but he’s got $200 million to work with, more with international signings, and he’s had this money for years and years. Whatever.

I mean that would be great, but I think it’s going require a lot of patience. I’m tired of the stupid ass trades.
Stumbled upon this:

Boyd would be a good target. Young LHP.
Guys like Minor and Duffy should be avoided.
Wonder if Tigers would consider Frazier straight up for Boyd.
I wonder if Cashman will get fired one day for making stupid trades.
Boyd’s peripherals have certainly trended in the right direction this year. But there isn’t enough of a track record there to justify trading away outfield depth when all of your starting outfielders are injury-prone.
Also, if he’s coming into his own, why wouldn’t the Tigers build around him?
I don’t trade position players for pitchers because they’re so fragile. If I’m trading for a pitcher l I’m trade other pitchers.
Remember last year everybody wanted Fullmer? How would that have worked out?
