CC to the DL

CC has been DL'd for 10 days and Kontos is up.  No idea what move they used to get Kontos on the 40, and sad it wasn't used to call up McBroom, or Zehner.  Anyway, I assume it a skipped start for his knee and no worries. I suspect the next pitching move will be Justus, who seems ready.

UPDATE: Ronald Toreyes is coming back, too. Not sure of that move, but I'd rather DFA him.  Tyler Wade is just better but they never let him gain traction.

FURTHER UPDATE: They finally moved Jordan Montgomery to the 60 Day DL to create space for Kontos on their 40.

I was updating as you posted that.

Two crazy things going on out there:

1. Torreyes is the heart and soul of the team. What?

2. The Yankees shouldn’t give up trying to catch the Red Sox.
Wait. They try to win games. If they have more wins at the end of the season then ...

“ His other stuff is not allowing him to throw his fastball when he wants to“

I know most of you like Cashman more than I do, but if a pc other than Rothschild is going to look at Severino, he’s the one that’s got to get it done.

At 4:24 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I love the mythology surrounding Bret Gardner. Not really.

At 4:28 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Again, I am forced to ask, where is the one person who has proven the ability to fix the MLB version of Severino when he was broken?

In all seriousness, you’d think given how important Severino is to the future as well as the present that the Yankees would leave no stone unturned in trying to right Severino.

At 4:35 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I don’t necessarily believe there’s one person, but I know there’s one person who can’t, and he is the guy was watching Sonny Gray devolve a below average pitcher. Again, this is on Cashman

At 4:46 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Boone says a lot of shit to people

At 4:47 PM, Blogger Rich said...

If he’s tipping pitches and they can’t catch it wtf?

At 4:59 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Borrell is the guy, Sevy says "he gets me." And if they won't bring up DB they should send down Sevy.

At 5:24 PM, Blogger Rich said...

That wasn’t JD Martinez. They are fiddling while Severino burns

At 5:39 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

And having him throw 100 pitches again and again when he could use a physical and mental break. What is going on here?

I wonder if he really misses Sanchez.

At 6:53 PM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Quite possible. Some guys just click.

At 7:11 PM, Blogger Rich said...

It can’t explain everything.

At 7:19 PM, Blogger Rich said...

They are not crisp as a team under Boone.

At 8:37 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

The front office has clearly phoned it in and accepted the Wild Card as reality, but if they don’t get Severino right and make some tweaks to the pen then it won’t matter.

At 3:58 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Especially with Britton so ineffective.

Where is the track rice that Boone/ Rothschild have fixed anyone and what is Cashman doing about it?

As for Pedro, maybe his contract with the RS prohibits him from helping others in season?

At 8:05 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Britton is working through some issues but supposedly his stuff is still there. They just need to avoid using him in high leverage for now.

I’m beginning to wonder if Judge and Sanchez will even be the same players when they come back. May just be a lost year given all the injuries.

At 8:10 AM, Blogger Rich said...

I read somewhere that: Britton’s landing may be affected by his Achilles recovery, and Green now has a splitter?

At 5:03 PM, Blogger Rich said...

The longer Severino struggles (assuming he’s not hurt), the more I believe a good pitching coach could fix Gray.

Nevertheless, the Yankees should deploy a short leash in the short term on Sanchez, who had been enduring his worst major league season, particularly if the Yankees find themselves battling the A’s and/or Mariners for home-field advantage in the Oct. 3 American League wild-card game.

Would be nice to get Severino on a roll. SSS but so far J.A Happ & Lance Lynn with Yankees -- 35.2ip / 1.26 ERA / .84 WHIP / 37/10 K/BB Ratio.

Pretty good.

At 10:33 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Yep, Lynn is especially surprising, but then apparently he didn’t have a spring training? That could explain it.

At 11:21 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Did Ken Davidoff actually say that Romine was as good as Sanchez?

At 11:22 AM, Blogger Rich said...

What’s the downside of having Borrell or some retired pitching coach hired as a consultant take a look at Sanchez and Gray?

At 11:23 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Sevy (sorry).

Actually, why not have another hitting coach look at Bird, Sanchez, and maybe Torres

At 4:38 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Miggy

At 5:10 PM, Blogger Rich said...

What Andujar has accomplished at a time when he could have still finished off his development in the minors is so impressive. His bat speed is incredible.

At 6:36 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

This is a poorly coached team. Most of the player D is happening in the system.

At 6:46 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I know Cessa stunk. But can they really not score more than a run off these guys?

At 7:04 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

The lineup is poorly stacked and features Torreyes. Btw, Wade homere tonight.

At 7:28 PM, Blogger Rich said...

They have not dealt well with adversity, and they can’t fix anyone.

At 12:30 PM, Blogger Rich said...

There’s nobody healthy in the system that can help this putrid offense?

At 1:55 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

This is why they kinda have to sign/acquire some bats this offseason. Goodness.

At 2:02 PM, Blogger Rich said...

It’s bad enough that we had to pretend the Jeter with something other than it was for several years, we shouldn’t have to do it with Gardner.

At 2:07 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I think Bird can end up being another Smoak, but if Machado would play 3B I would be tempted to move Andujar to 1B.

I would like to see fresh eyes on this franchise, but I know it won’t happen.

At 2:27 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Didi and Gardy have gotten too many AB's this season without enough results. Bird is lost, and we need him. Judge, Sanchez and Frazier are all needed but hurt. They call up an offensive non-entitly like Torreyes instead of Wade or Avelino. Just ridiculous roster construction.

At 7:51 AM, Blogger Rich said...

What’s the point as long as the Rothschild is here?

Bill asks: How about Quintana for Gray in the offseason? Both guys are struggling with their new teams and could be guys that benefit from a change of scenery, maybe yanks throw in a lower level guy to offset the extra year of control for Q?

I’ve seen this idea floated around and I like it, but I can’t imagine the Cubs would do it straight up. I sure wouldn’t. Jose Quintana (4.46 ERA and 4.85 FIP) has been better than Sonny Gray (5.43 ERA and 4.33 FIP) this year and he has an extra season of team control. The Yankees would have to kick in a sweetener to make a deal happen, and it might have to be a significant sweetener. I’m a Sonny Gray fan but I have no faith in the dude turning it around at the moment. I’d bet on Quintana going forward.
—-

As I’ve said, given the way Severino has floundered and they can’t do a thing about it, I’m starting to believe that Gray can be fixed by good pitching coach.

So nfw. We’re lucky Cashman couldn’t get Quintana when he was publicly telling everyone how much he wanted him.

But if I’m another team, I would take a flyer on Gray because I know the Yankees can’t fix anyone.

At 8:21 AM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Sounds like a good change of scenery deal for both clubs. Quintana the former Yankee farmhand.

At 8:32 AM, Blogger Rich said...

That’s a fantasy with Rothschild

At 2:34 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Same lineup. Maybe they’ll be a different result.

At 4:43 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Lynn...

For the first time since being shelved, Sanchez threw to bases out of a crouch in order to test his right groin, which has been injured twice this season and has limited him to 66 games.

“Gary had a really good day, upped his running and he was throwing to bases. [He] looked really good, he’s on track,’’ Aaron Boone said before the Yankees played the Blue Jays in The Bronx on Friday night. “[An] MRI showed healing up properly. I think [he is] going back to Tampa Sunday and continue to ramp up and a rehab [assignment] shortly thereafter.’’

At 4:26 AM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Sanchez will be back after Judge according to Boone.

At 5:45 AM, Blogger Rich said...

I don’t think they know.

At 6:21 AM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

They need another bat for sure as we don't know how effective Judge will be with his wrist injury.

Donaldson could be an option as he can play 1B/3B and DH as he is nearly ready to come off the DL and be put on waivers.

McCutchen is another that can play some OF as well.

At 6:29 AM, Blogger Rich said...

They have the HalCap to contend with.

At 7:00 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

They aren’t getting anyone else. Doing so would put them over the cap.

Not trading Andujar might just end up being the best non-trade Cashman has made in the last decade.

At 12:33 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Yup.

Girardi turned down invite to the pregame ceremony. Apparently, not happy about departure. I get it from his perspective.

At 12:41 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Pinstripe Alley has a piece defending Hicks. And as I have said, I have come around on Hicks. I don’t love him but he is worth keeping absent a can’t refuse offer or unreasonable contract demands.

But they compare him to Didi to prove he isn’t particularly inconsistent, saying no one says Didi is inconsistent.

What?

Fancred | Jon Heyman: Heyman reports that Adam Jones cleared waivers, and that the Orioles recently contacted the Yankees about him. Baltimore was rebuffed because the Yankees are counting on Judge’s return, and are concerned because they are only a few million dollars below the $197-million luxury tax threshold.
In other trade-deadline news, Curtis Granderson cleared waivers on Tuesday. Brendan Kuty, writing for NJ Advance Media, reports that CC Sabathia had some nice things to say about his former teammate. Meanwhile, Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic suggests the recently released Danny Valencia could be a real nice stopgap solution to New York’s outfield problem:
