This Week on the Blog
Okay, as the Yanks begin their only split squad game of ST, they've settled on their first 25 man roster. The Giants are attending all the major pro-days. The Rangers still haven't called up Andersson and Chytil. And the Knicks are losing, but may not be losing fast to move up appreciably pre-lottery. Let's take a look.
Yankees: This morning the Yanks announced that Jonathn Holder will be the 25th man, and Torreyes has some how made the team again. Sticking with Holder prevents them - at least for now - from Joba'ing Domingo German. He'll take his regular turns in AAA and should be ready as needed. Apparently, Drury's elbow wasn't bad enough to DL him, but Jacoby Ellsbury will start the season on the DL. Who would have thought that was such a bad deal? Oh yeah, all of us did. Regular season starts on the 29th in Toronto. Interestingly, the Yanks look like they're going to bat Aaron Judge first against lefties - to the mass consternation of baseball fans - as if getting your highest OBP guy the most at bats was somehow a bad idea. Run of the mill idiocy.
Giants: CB Russ Cokrell signed with Carolina yesterday, so the Giants head into the draft needing as many as 2 CB's with just 6 picks so far. They're going to have to find significant talent in the undrafted period this year, though they will have an advantage with their picks ending in Round 5. Thus the Giants can start working the phones almost 3 rounds before the other teams.
Rangers: The Rangers shoudl be tanking, but they are playing too hard, and the young kids have played to well for a real tank, and like the Knicks they will have trouble moving up from around 10th overall without lottery luck. Looks like they are waiting till there are just 7 games left to call up last year's first rounders. Or maybe they're afraid they'll create more wins. Wonder who the new coach will be.
Knicks recently won 2 games, which really screwed with their tank and probably stuck them with the 9th pick again. Hornacek thinks they should draft or acquire a real 3, which is true, but he probably won't be around when that player arrives. He's curiously underplayed Frank Ntilikina, lately, which has not sat well with the teenager. What's more, Horny cited defensive considerations and Frank is the only elite defender they currently have. Wonder who the new coach will be.
So there it is. have a great week everyone!

Freakin Bird critcsism pisses me off.
He left the Game Hurt ....Foot injury again..UGGG
Not sure I've ever seen a player so damn snakebit.
There’s an obvious comparison but I choose to resist it.
I know what you mean but my understanding was his injuries were of the freak variety. We now have a shoulder and a right foot for Bird.
Bird’s foot injury seems worse than it was because they misdiagnosed it for so long.
Last year
Masahiro Tanaka served up a career-high 35 home runs last season, prompting pitching coach Larry Rothschild to challenge the right-hander to improve his fastball command this spring. Tanaka focused on that early in camp before unveiling his full arsenal in his final spring outing, in which he held the Red Sox to a run on five hits over 5 2/3 innings.
Bird will be fine. He was misdiagnosed and mistreated for 3+ months last year. That's not on him, that's on the Yankee medical staff. I doubt they're miss an extra bone in his foot the way they missed the extra bone in his ankle.
Rule 5 pick, Mike Ford is back. He had a monster year at 1B last year.
I just saw that Bird had complained of ankle tightness. I’m hoping it’s scar tissue.
“He complained of tightness in his ankle, that same foot as last year. We just wanted to be proactive about it and scratched him and sent him back to Tampa, and they’re going to proceed accordingly,’’ Bard said.
Yankees PR: “Update on 1B Greg Bird: Results from an MRI and CT scan taken earlier today revealed right foot inflammation. Bird is scheduled to be evaluated by foot specialist, Dr. Martin O’Malley, on Monday in New York.“
No breaks, no extra bones, no problem. Just ice it. Might need different shoes.
Aaron Boone on Greg Bird: “(We are) at least a little bit optimistic, based on the pictures, but tomorrow should tell us a lot as far as what it is time-wise, all those kinds of things. Hopefully we’ll get some good answers tomorrow.”
Boone said if Bird starts the season on the DL, with the Blue Jays starting Happ, a lefty, Tyler Austin likely would get the start in the season opener if he's on the roster.
Tyler crushed lefties last year. To the point where Girardi wouldn't use him:) So glad he's gone.
I thought the Yankees were playing today, but I guess I was wrong.
Mara is tired of bed asked about OBJ.
Ivan tired of Mara’s arrogance and incompetence.
English is my second language...apparently.
@RapSheet
From @gmfb: My understanding is that #Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr will not set foot on a field without a new contract extension agreed to — with the #Giants or any team. ... This comes a day after owner John Mara said no one is “untouchable” in trade talks.
I have no idea whether not this report is true, or part of the negotiating strategy, but if the Giants have any thought of winning even a little this year, they need OBJ.
And it’s a little curious that Mara is so obsessed with OBJ‘s behavior when he knowingly signed players who hurt people, including women.
The Giants are signing veteran safety Mike Thomas to a two-year deal, according to a source. Solid player and character. Team captain for the Dolphins. Can play both safety spots and his 55 special teams tackles is tied for the league lead the past four years.
Hope this is a minor issue with Bird. We need his bat in this lineup.
Well it sucks that Bird has bone spurs and will be out 6 to 8 weeks, in terms of a diagnosis it seems rather benign.

Problem is it’s always something. At some point they need to strongly consider whether or not he will ever be healthy for any length of time.
