Yanks Signing Neil Walker

I think there are 2 possibilities, first being that Tyler Wade really did get hurt Saturday, and they need a stop gap at second who is better than Torreyes.  The other possibility is that Wade is okay, but they want to turn him into a Super Ute - meaning a guy who can play all the infield and outfield positions, other than C.  Looks like the Yanks plan to send both Andujar and Torres down to become finishned products. It's also possible that they have another deal comong that involves trading some infielders.  I think that's unlikely because I don't see anyone who could come back.  It's also probably that the price for the switch-hitting Walker was so low, it was just an automatic buy for the Yanks. Walker is 32, and didn't play much last year, but he has been  a 113 OPS+ guy over his career, and there could be worse stop gaps. I believe all of this is pending his physical.  And we might not want to take that for granted.

The problem with stop-gaps is their propensity to block guys who really are ready. It’s why I don’t like the Drury deal if it means Andujar never gets a shot. I’ll hold off on my criticisms until the final 25-man is announced.

Why build a great farm if your first move is to overpay and overager?

I would’ve preferred Wade to be the second baseman, and I agree with Mike about third-base.

There’s a win now mindset creeping in which I think means a big trade for a picture at some point.

If Wade ends up being a good hitter then they should strongly consider trading Didi and letting Wade play short. Didi is going to get expensive soon.

Espinosa is gone which is good because he sucks.

What’s up with The Athletic. I can’t see paying for it.

Hopefully, Cave DFA turns into a trade, but he is one of the reasons I wanted to move both Gardy an Ellsbury this offseason and early camp.

Gleyber sent down. Numbers just haven’t been there so far. I expect him to put it together with more at-bats in AAA.

I have to admit, until today I was unaware that Chance Adams is having such a bad spring.

Future reliever, IMO. But possibly a good one.

TAMPA — Miguel Andujar, who had been vying for the starting job at third before the acquisition of Brandon Drury and Neil Walker, played first base for Double-A Trenton in an intrasquad game against Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday.

He has never played any position other than third in six seasons at the professional level and the Yankees still consider him a third baseman.

TAMPA — With less than two weeks left before Opening Day, Neil Walker finally made his Grapefruit League debut on Friday night, starting at first base with the Yankees hosting the Astros at Steinbrenner Field.

Before Walker’s debut, manager Aaron Boone said he wants to take advantage of the versatility of both Walker and Tyler Wade and that he could use Walker as a backup at first for Greg Bird.

“I’d love him to see him be that guy if we want to give Bird a day,” Boone said of Walker. “Especially with Wade’s ability to move around [the infield], it will be interesting to see the moving parts. It should give us versatility and keep us fresh.”

Boone went so far as to say he doesn’t see the need to have one of them be the everyday second baseman.

“Not necessarily,” Boone said. “There could be regular at-bats for both of those guys.”
