Kevin Reese Gets the Denbo Job
The sort of longish hunt for Gary Denbo's replacement has concluded and the sweet swinging, but eternally blocked Kevin Reese is the they guy. Reese was actually a guy the Yanks traded for as a minor leaguer back in 2003, he'd gone to University of San Diego and been drafted by the Padres. Blocked though he was, he did stay with the organizationa and apparently has made a name for himself on the pro scouting side working with Cash in NYC, but now he'll head down to Tampa and get to hang out with Damon Oppenheimer and all the cool amateur scouts who've been picking all the plums.
It will be interesting to see if the he keeps all of Denbo's innovations, like Captain's Camp, and whether he adds some of his own. He'll also probably end up working closely with the guys he beat out for the post. I'm glad it's a guy who had a bunch of experience in the system. I also get the feeling that he really wanted it. He was the only one of the NYC based execs to interview for it. It's set up for great success. Let's hope he optimizes it.

I would give Hicks another year to better gauge what his true ability is. Of him, Castro, and Didi, I am only fully onboard with Didi. I don’t view him as untouchable, but the next level, which is high.
If we can move Ellsbury I wouldn't mind having Hicks keep the position warm for Florial. He's another guy, like Didi, I'd want to trade high on if he gets hot.
Hick's season line of .266/.372/.475/.847, 122 OPS+ is a reasonable expectation over a full season, IMO, except maybe with a little less power. I'd be fine with him starting in CF to keep the seat warm for Florial, but like the article says, I wouldn't sign him when he's a free agent.

He has only approached that once.

I wish this will happen.
Espada to Astros, source to ESPN.
Espada is the new bench coach for the Astros.
This is going to be a really intriguing hire.
Which, Reese or the Managers, coaches, and development exec who haven't been hired yet?
The manager.

So basically, he wasn’t the right man for the kids. That’s more or less what I thought was the case before him being let go.
That's what I've believed for the last few years: not the right guy for the kids that were and conitue to be coming up.
Kevin Long joined the Nats.
My preference is that the next manager and his coaches were never on Girardi’s staff.
I'd like to see Rob Thomson stick around for his Yankeeness.
I hope Kevin does a great Job. I have met him before and if it counts for anything, he's good guy.

“It’s not the pitcher, it’s the elbow,’’ an NL scout said. “Don’t see a team taking a chance.’’
An AL East voice believes it will be hard to find a team willing to go above the $22.3 million per year for Tanaka.
“I’d be shocked if anyone tops that. He performed down the stretch but that is not representative of what he’ll give you for the next three or four years during the regular season,’’ the scout said. “I think he is making a mistake if he opts out.’’
He announced he's staying. If anything, I think it's due to teams potentially shying away over not being able to find anyone who would insure a new contract.
New post about Tanaka!
