Yankees Post Season Week 2

Alright.  As of last week, three teams still needed managers.  But the Nationals and Phillies got their guys and now there's just one team that doesn't have a manager.  It's our team. The Phillies hired Gabe Kapler, whom LA sports reporters had linked with the Yanks.  Though he was supposedly a great candidate, I couldn't really get over his Red Sox days or his steroid denials, so perhaps this will work out for the best.  Some ex-players who've maintained their press contacts like David Cone and Jerry Hairston Jr. have had their names floated, but I think it just might be someone that's already in the sytem, which would be great because they would already know all the players coming up.  The Yanks, so far, haven't acknowledged talking to anyone, though they have interviewed 4 candidates for Denbo's old job.

Also, this week, the World Series will end, and then there are just 3 days for Tanaka to opt out. We could also hear about Brian Cashman's new deal.

I would love Cone as the pitching coach.

Would Hillman come back as bench coach even though he has a managerial job in Korea?

Damn, I really wanted Kapler but it is what it is.

I saw Rosenthal mentioned Jerry Hairston Jr. as a potential candidate. Every GM has a list of who they want so I take what the media says with a grain of salt.

I have faith in Cashman and will wait to see how this plays out.

I’d be surprised if they hired from within but that’s just me.

Oh good:

...Girardi also mentioned that he had talked to owner Hal Steinbrenner, who told him that a different role with the Yankees would be a possibility if he was interested.

Doubt that would happen right away if it does.

It's too quiet on the Yankee front, and while that could be respect for the series (where they let overt racists play) anyway they have about a dozen jobs to fill, Tanaka to worry about and an offseason plan to cook up.

As a general rule, I don’t agree with this:

Michael, I'll talk about the Giants in the next This Week on the Blog thread. I'm disgusted and confused.

Vis RAB. Didi is projected to make $9m in arb. Would you extend him now or wait a year?

I have been skeptical of him because he doesn’t walk, but he does seem to be more selective in his at bats, and as long as they get rid of Castro, his hacking at the plate isn’t as big a deal and he it does make good contact. Defensively he is much better than Jeter ever was.

1. It’s time to consider a Gregorius extension. Didi has emerged as a true core player for the Yankees. He’s an above-average hitter and an above-average defender, and he’s a big part of the clubhouse culture. Gregorius can become a free agent following the 2019 season, and I think it’s time the Yankees start thinking about signing him long-term. He’s only 27 and quality in-their-prime shortstops are awfully hard to find.

The Jean Segura extension is a perfect benchmark for Gregorius. Segura signed his five-year, $70M deal earlier this year, two years prior to free agency at age 27, the exact same point of his career as Gregorius is right now. Look at the numbers:

Segura in year prior to extension: .319/.368/.499 (126 wRC+) and +5.0 WAR
Gregorius in year prior to extension: .287/.318/.478 (107 wRC+) and +3.9 WAR

Segura career: .280/.319/.396 (91 wRC+) and +8.6 WAR
Gregorius career: .266/.313/.413 (94 wRC+) and +11.5 WAR

Segura had the better platform year prior to signing his extension, though Gregorius has the better body of work overall. That five-year extension worth $70M is the benchmark for Didi. The market has been set.

The problem with an extension is the luxury tax. If Gregorius gets the $9M arbitration projection, he counts as $9M against the luxury tax threshold. Give him the Segura extension, and he counts as $14M (the average annual value of the contract) against the luxury tax threshold, and saving $5M is a big deal. Then again, signing Didi now could equal tens of millions in savings later. An extension has to be a serious consideration

Oh and dumping Castro is the way to offset the higher salary for luxury tax purposes.
