Yanks Shouldn't Trade Mateo, Either
Since Eric Duncan and Edwar Ramirez made a little adjustment to Jorge Mateo's set-up or load, he's gone off, gotten promoted and been the best player on the EL leading Thunder. He still has his 80 speed, and is now playing plus D whether it's at SS or CF. The other day he hit a Grand Slam and has had an even bigger impact on the Thunder than Clint Frazier is having on the Yankees. He like Florial, is someone that the Yanks should hang onto like grim death and certainly not throw into any trade that isn't for a Superstar (Trout, Stanton, Harper, Judge level) or a young ACE, and none of those are available. Sonny Gray is, and though he's a good pitcher, I'd be stunned if we don't produce comprable or better starters over the next few years, starting with a healthy Kaprielian.
Anyway, the Yanks should only be making trades to set up the next dynasty, not prematurely try to start one, and throw future fixtures into a trade for a #3 starter.

One starter is not going to make that much of a difference, and if he's on the DL within a month or a year, it would be a disaster.
Btw, I expect them to trade for a starter today.
As I said it's his kryptonite
Lots of chatter about how Florial is expendable because of Fowler. If they pencil Fowler or Bird in for next year, they're making a big mistake.
Especially Fowler. That is a very serious injury. Full recovery is not assured. So that's spin.

To get this done likely is going to take four prospects and I simply do not see how it does not include Estevan Florial or Jorge Mateo as a main component plus someone such as Domingo Acevedo or the rising prospect Freicer Perez and two other attractive pieces with high ceilings.
I think we're underselling Gray and overstating prospect value in here...
I don't believe in Mateo or Acevedo, having seen both in person over 3x each.. If Acevedo becomes anything more than a RP, I'd be amazed. Mateo is fast but I don't like the discipline and he makes a lot of weak contact.
Curious where we think we're going to obtain SP from if we don't give anything of value up...
I believe in numbers. And Mateo has started taking his walks again since they made their little correction.
I'm not interested in adding a starter to this team at this time.
If you believe in numbers then Mateo isn't a keeper...
After a SSS in AA, Mateo hasn't done much and really didn't deserve a promotion this year after what he did in High-A.
I believe Gray will be valuable to this team and for the future.
We're not under selling his injury history. It is.
Would you consider Kershaw and Felix injury prone? They have the same amount of GS as Gray over the past 3 years....
Billy, I believe the minors are there for player development, and I believe that player D is non-linear, and in many cases, if you are following a prospect, you can see the light go on. I think the light went on for Mateo when they made their little fix. He's a big time talent and he's proving it.
Without looking up injuries and such, Kershaw is sui generis, a 162 career ERA.+. Felix is 4 years older, and has been in decline based on ERA+ for the last three seasons.
So the comparisons have limitations.
It's a fair argument, to be sure, as is arguing the risks associated with Florial given his K rate and distance from the majors. Ultimately, it boils down to my skepticism that they can truly compete for a championship this season plus the risks of building a team around pitching as opposed to offense. Let's face it, pitchers are getting hurt like never before.
I would personally drive up from Mississippi to Charleston, then to Trenton to pick up Florial and Mateo and take them to the airport if it netted the Yankees Clayton Kershaw. He's a truly elite arm. Gray is simply good.
What could Hicks bring back.
Not many humans can hit the ball as hard as Clint.
I believe in Aaron Hicks, and with Gardner gone after next season and Fowler coming back from injury, I would keep him around. To answer your question, probably not much.
I know he's been up and down, but I fricking love Tanaka when he's dialed in.
McKinney is having a monster game at AAA. He's finally put it all together.
Damn, they hit Gardy!
Teams' draft picks will drop if their payroll is over a certain amount. This seems relevant.

That won't pass.
