Yanks Clinch a Wildcard
The Yanks just clinched at least a wildcard game. As the Yanks clinched, Greg Bird, Rob Refsnyder, John Ryan Murpy, Slade Heathcott, Brett Gardner and Dellin Betances were playing defense. All Yankee draft picks. Bird and Refs also homered in the 4-1 win, and and Adam Warren, another pick, pitched 3 innings of scoreless relief. It was also the Yankees 10,000th win. Wow.
Now the Yanks need one more win or one more loss by the other wildcard contenders to make it a home playoff game.

An overachieving team thanks in large part to the middle of the order but man, what could've been had Warren stayed in the rotation and Refsnyder was up sooner.

Yeah, that hangover tomorrow is gonna be epic.
I hope they can survive and advance because this is fun.
Refs has the hit tool and is ok defensively. So what more does any team need?
Veteran presence. (Regardless of actual performance.)
They had a veteran last season who couldn't dream of making the plays up the middle that Refs and Didi made tonight.
Regardless, going forward, Refs, Bird, Ryan, Sanchez, Ackley, Heathcott and Williams and, when they're ready, Judge and Jagielo, need to be getting big-league at-bats.
I was thinking the Yankees should try Sanchez at 3B as a fallback. Headley's bat is invisible and his defense is not the best. Sanchez should be able to at least hit.
Jagielo seems a little star crossed. He's a medical scratch from Az League, and Tyler Austin, who's also been star crossed, is taking his place.
Sanchez was also a 3B before he was a catcher.
So again, do they let contracts block better younger players, and if yes, for how long at each position? That's the tell of the franchise's direction going forward, particularly at 3B, the OF (even beyond Beltran who is their best offensive player right now), 1B, and C.
At the very least, if they do keep Girardi, there HAS to be a come-to-Jesus meeting in regard to his preferring veteran, crappy players over younger, cheaper guys with more upside. The attitude that kept Drew around until he got hurt and sent Warren to the bullpen hampered this team, and it will continue to do so going forward.
He will need the help of the Steinbrenners' largess, but if Cashman wants to demonstrate the ninja-ocity that some supporters think he has, this offseason has to be about unloading contracts.
I don't think this is a problem, it's an opportunity. Play Slade, and has Ackley ever played 3B?
3. How badly injured are Jacoby Ellsbury and Chase Headley?
In describing a pair of back injuries yesterday, Girardi didn’t sound overly concerned about either Ellsbury or Headley. They were both available last night, so they’re probably fine going forward. If not, though, each one would present a unique problem for the Yankees. Ellsbury, despite his second-half numbers, remains a key figure at the top of the lineup. On his best days, he’s an elite difference maker and not having him changes the lineup quite a bit. Headley, meanwhile, has been inconsistent this season, but the Yankees don’t really have a strong backup at third base. If Headley can’t play, would it be Brendan Ryan at third for a must-win game?
4. Stephen Drew will not rejoin the team and it’s highly unlikely he will be active in the playoffs. Tests in Pittsburgh revealed something called a vestibular concussion. He is staying in New York.

I wish him good health, but he never should have been a Yankee, and his Yankee career should now be over. In fact, his presence has been a net detriment.
On a brighter note, Eovaldi is getting closer and Sanchez could play a game this weekend... if games are played.
