Yanks: Severino to the DL
Meanwhile, with Severino, Clarkin and Hensley currently on the shelf - and Hensley facing a year or so of rehab - we better believe the Yanks will be looking for some high end starters when the draft takes place next month.
Oh, and some of the healthy ones like Bryan Mitchell and Rookie Davis just had their first non-dominant stars of the season - let's hope that was just coincidental dead arms. Oh and Brady Lail got hit in the face with a comebacker.
Yeesh. Look for them to load up when the draft starts.

This sort of takes me back to a question in a previous thread: If he's available, should the Yankees take Brady Aiken at 16? There's a high risk due to the TJS, but if he returns to form, that's a No. 1 overall pick that you just got.
Given the lack of top-end starters in the Yankees' system outside Severino, it's worth a discussion by the decision-makers.

I'd consider it. There are a couple of high end prep pitchers who could be in our window at 16.
I would rather go offense, all things being equal.
Posada on with Francesa said that the Yankee minor league system schooled them well both in baseball and in the Yankee way.
The amount of prospects who can say that about the Yankees since that period can fit on the head of pin.
Therein lies the problem and why old players must overperform in order to have success.
I'd probably take him at 16, but I can understand the argument for both sides. I'd likely feel his upside was too great to pass up.

Thinking about last night's game, and actually a few recent ones, if Murphy had been unable to block the pitches in the dirt that McCann couldn't handle, he would be getting killed for it. McCann...not his fault.
McCann is at least starting to hit a little bit better, but not near enough to justify what he's making.

We have two sort of holes in our inventort right now, first is starting pitching, the other is hitting prospects who are 18 and 19, because we didn't take any prep bats last year, and instead signed 7 first rounder and more in IFA, the majority of whom are just 17 now.
If TJS had an automatic recovery rate, it would be easy, but it doesn't.
So unless they can see him pitch before the draft and be the same pitcher, the risk is too high.
Take the best available player in the draft.
IMO, you shouldn't base it on current need because the time they are ready, those needs will likely change.
Really don't like the way Girardi gives the few guys who are good or don't totatlly suck "days" during rivalry series.

This mentality has killed them over the last several years, and is directly related to their offensive decline.
As I have said, with or without Tanaka, offense is their biggest weakness.
That's not negativity, it's realism.
How do you have a pitcher on the ropes 2 nights in a row, only come out of it with 2 runs in the top of the first, and score nothing, literally, after that.

I didn't see it, but it sounds like you can't knock the catcher over. They are not supposed to block the plate; yet they do. The rule is a mess
Given their performance as a whole up to this point, I'm willing to give the offense a pass for the last two games. If it starts becoming a trend, however...
Heathcott is cooling off of late, but Refsnyder is heating up, and he hasn't had an error in quite a while.
Yes, they have received unexpected, above recent career norm production from a few players, but it is precisely because of that deviation from the recent norm that they should be actively seeking to find ways to offset a likely decline (even in relative terms) from these players.
And we're largely talking about Drew.
This isn't holding your fire because an aging Yankee great like Jeter is hurting your team as he fades from the scene.
This is a player who stunk last year, stinks this year, and has no stature to speak of.
As I said above, however, all of this was even more true of Roberts, and they still twiddled their thumbs.
Unlike last year, they have a more ready replacement in Pirela, who seems to be trying to do too much in some AB, probably because he (rightly) believes he has a short time to make a statement, with the offensively-challenged Ryan coming back soon.
They can still follow the "old boys" blueprint that Cashman outlined this offseason, but do they have to apply it to every position except SS (and his 48 OPS+?
It just seems bizarre, as if they have veteran-Tourettes.
There really is no excuse for Pirela not to be getting as many at-bats as possible. With Drew and Gregorius on the team, Ryan and Petit are redundant.

He's standing up for his player, which is what you want your manager to do. Cashman is the one who needs to say, "Play Pirela every day," or just cut Drew if Giradi can't help himself.

It is amazing how every time there seems to be a roster crunch with the rotation, someone gets hurt. Unreal.
Last night Girardi said that offense comes and goes, pitching sustains you.
Really? Offense, albeit mostly from four players, has been what has distinguished this team from the one of the last few seasons. Without that kind of contribution, I don't care how well you pitch (in any reasonable sense), you won't win.
If Cashman shares that view, look no further for the reason they have underperformed their payroll.
And even if you are pitching-centric, how can you not see how fragile they are, as we have seen repeatedly throughout MLB?
Fortunately, Tanaka and Nova should soon moot the need for Capuano.

I've long felt the organization has overvalued pitching and defense at the expense of hitting. Girardi's comments, combined with Drew continually getting playing time, are the latest evidence.
Literally the only reason to keep Refsnyder down in AAA anymore is if his defense is truly a D at best, as Jed Weisberger recently told me it was on Twitter. Even then, I could still live with the miscues if he hits, though I doubt the Yankees' higher-ups feel that way.
Look, they made the switch to 2B. If they think it isn't working, make him an OF. He has the hit tool. As I have said, it's the most valuable tool there is. They have no young bats with upside on the roster. There should be a place for one.
Of course, when you pay someone like Headley $13m for 4, and McCann $17m for 5, and they are league average hitters, at best, that makes much less sense than giving PT what may be a defensively challenged, but possibly above league hitter at league minimum.
And Grego may well not hit enough to be more than a UI.

The Yankees have placed Chase Whitley on the disabled list with what is being called a right elbow sprain. The team sent a release specifically to clarify that it’s a sprain, not a strain.
For the time being at least, reliever Jose Ramirez has been called up from Triple-A. That could be a temporary move until Chris Capuano makes his first start.
The Yankees have already said they plan to have Capuano replace Whitley in the rotation.
I wonder how much better Warren has to be than Capuano to remain in the rotation.

You'd have liked to have seen Pineda stop the losing streak, but he didn't have his slider and run support would have helped.
Offense changes everything.
Tulo must be the answer since he is good offensively.
