ARod Powers the Yanks to a Win

ARod, whom I used to have pictures of, hit two bombs tonight, which contributed 3 runs to the Yanks total of 5 in their 5-4 victory over Tampa Bay.   Stephen Drew also hit a homer - his third.   He's becoming a mini-Kingman.   Still it's early and the only patter that may be emerging is that ARod is not washed up, and Betances may be coming around -- also that Ellsbury was egregiously overpaid, but is still better than McCann and Beltran.   We'll see if they can get closer to .500 this weekend.

It is interesting to consider who is the worst signing out of that troika. They each are stupendously poor signings.

Can't believe Alex has been the best hitter on the club.

I can because of his skill set compared to the overpriced junk that's on the team. The only other complete hitter they have is Beltran, but it remains to be seen if he has anything left

McCann was the worst signing because they had a ready made in house replacement who only required patience. At some point if this thing is going to turn around that's exactly what they need multiple times

In house replacement at catcher??

I hope you are not saying Sanchez.

Murphy and Romine could have held it down until Sanchez or someone else was ready.

Sanchez has a great arm and that's about where it ends as a catcher. He has problems calling games and doesn't frame well. The man was given a great gift of power and arm strength but no motivation to go along with it.

Sanchez will be traded before his value goes completely down the toilet.

Prospects are hit and miss.

If they're going to trade him, it needs to be for a bat. No more pitching.

While prospects are indeed hit-or-miss, that attitude is often used to justify not giving them a fair shot. In the current baseball climate more than ever, the Yankees will have to develop players and keep them if they want to be anything more than mediocre.

I agree MK, but In Sanchez case his shelf life is just about up IMO.

Matt Tracy lost on waivers to the Marlins. That's a little annoying.

Yankyfan, that was more a general statement than a specific one about Sanchez.

If prospects are hit andi miss why have scouts?

Cause scouts can evaluate tools in players. It's up to the player to put it all together with coaching.

There are busts after busts where "Prospects" mash I need AAA but can't hack it in the major leagues.

Trade some and keep some and cross your fingers.

If people know right from wrong, why have lawyers? Sorry, LNJ i couldn't resist..

Lawyers obscure wrong in the criminal context. That was never my area, although I did a clerkship for a judge sitting in the criminal part for a few months.

The tools comment is am oversimplification of what scouts do. It's at least as much about projecting talent, makeup, etc and then coaching it up. Some teams do it better than others on a consistent basis. That alone refutes prospect fungible-ness.

But even taking your point, if it was just about tools, you could rely on a central scouting service; each team wouldn't need their own.
