With a Full Spring Training: Drew Still Sucks
People kept saying that the reason Stephen Drew fell off a cliff last year was that he'd had no Spring Training, and that this year, with a full Spring Training we'd see a player closer to the out of context 2013 version of Drew that played for the Sox. Well guess what, he got a full Spring Training and he still sucks and has already recorded an error, and looks like he has some learning to do at 2B, just like the younger players who can hit better than he can.
One of the big problems with the Yanks is they are no longer run as a meritocracy, instead they are run as a contractacy. Whoever has the bigger contract plays. Huggins didn't believe that, Barrow didn't believe in that, Weis didn't believe in that, Casey didn't believe in that, and Billy didn't believe in that - but that's where they're at.
And I have no idea where Girardi's man love for Drew comes from, but he used him as a pinch hitter tonight in the 6th when the Yanks were rallying and both Brett Gardner who's good, and Brian McCann who's at least better than Drew were sitting on the bench. And he let him bat again in the 9th with those same guys still on the bench. I've never thought he was much of a game manager, but jeepeers creepers that looked like something Pete Rose might have done if he actually did bet against the Reds.
Also, the vaunted defense hasn't gotten around to vaunting yet, and the lineup, which has been at least a bat short since 2009, is a few bats short now.

Ramon hit for the cycle and also walked for the Rail Riders.
If Drew is not a plus defensively, he needs to go, and Refs needs to be in New York.
Flores should have gotten a roster spot over Young.
Flores is coming off a bunch of injuries. Slade who is an excellent defender was 2 for 5 I think. He should be back on the 40 instead of some of the guys that are.
The mindset from the top-down is killing them, but like an alcoholic who is f'ing up his or her life, they are the last to know.
Even if you want to believe that Cashman is Hal's dutiful puppet, think about what he said.
"Everything with the Yankees is a short-term process," Cashman said on ESPN radio today. "Building the perfect beast over time, as you see with the Cubs or the Astros, that's not going to happen here." So really, nothing has changed. The Yankees will sign more old guys and hope that they click as they did in 2009. As Casey Stengel said, they say you can't do it, but sometimes it doesn't always work.
NEWSFLASH: IT'S NOT WORKING.
So cut the fucking shit and stop pretending fans don't know you are a bunch of fatuous morons.
As for Girardi, he wanted to avoid losing his bench in one move. So he turned to Drew.
The problem is that the offense isn't good enough to waste late in the game opportunities.
And he if thinks this roster has anything in common with the 2009 roster, he is mentally challenged.

- great line

I posted my displeasure for that move in the other thread.
That was a winnable game last night. I'll reserve judgement on the pitching/defense until the weather picks up a little bit. The game of baseball is tough as it is, let alone trying to play at a high level in slight rain and 40 degree weather.
CC looked good except for the 2nd inning, hopefully he builds on that. He hasn't pitched much in 2 years, so gaining consistency with his delivery will help eliminate the big innings. The guy didn't give up any XBH or BB, which is a good indicator that he's starting to come around.
BTW, GET PETIT OFF THE EFFIN TEAM.
Maybe CC will be better, but since his decline, we have seen the high K, but bad one inning losses pile up.
He is leaving too many balls over the plate.
Girardi is wrapped in even more teflon than Cashman.
He will give any veteran the benefit of the doubt even when there is no reasonable doubt.
Drew is better than Roberts, so this could get pretty unpleasant.
I actually see some small positive signs with Gregorious, but he either has Bernie's lack of instincts (without the compensatory ability), or he is really anxious and needs a Valium or something.
OT, but I've been on the "Friedman isn't the genius everyone thinks he is" bandwagon for a while now, and this piece only reinforces that belief:

Well, they did draft well for a while, but beyond that, they competed at a very high level for a long time despite having a payroll that was 1/6 to 1/3 that of the Yankees. That makes competing extremely hard, unless the big spending teams both spends and drafts poorly, and for a while both the Yankees and Sox did that.
The Sox, however, have drafted better, and more than that, have prioritized offense, unlike the Yankees' strange GM.
More than that, the money really has been a curse for the Yankees because it has compensated, and really covered up, inefficient management from top to bottom.
The Rays drafted well when they had top five picks every year (Beckham being the exception), but fell off considerably afterward. That's not to say Friedman's a bad GM, but I wouldn't rate his Rays front office above St. Louis's, Boston's, Oakland's or the Chicago Cubs', for example.
Cobb 4th round
Hellickson 4th round
Shields 16th round
Davis 3rd round
Jennings 10th round
How recent were those drafts? Jennings is extremely average.
Apparently they stuck Pirela in CF. Cashman has totally lost me.
Girardi put him in CF to test his versatility.
Btw, you can't blame the souts for much of the draft stuff. Hal was restricting budgets for the years leading up to the slotting system.
I blame Cashman for the series of boneheaded moves, and Hal for his cheapness and tolerating mediocrity.
Aaron Judge hit a Winfieldian 3 run shot in his AA debut.
Hal created the mediocrity in the drafts that were still probably better than average.
PITCHING AND DEFENSE Y'ALL.
