Yanks System Stuff

Today the Yanks held a little press even welcoming Hideki Matsui back home as a special assistant to Brian Cashman and VP of Player Development Gary Denbo.   Denbo's title is interesting, because it was no Mark Newman's title.  Prior to becoming VP of Baseball Operations,  Mark Newman had been director of player development -- and players were developing.  The problem for Newman was that when he got promoted, he got pulled in too many directions, and some of the people below him and around the organization had left and been inadequately replaced and Player Development went to hell.

For example, several years ago there were guys taking kickbacks from signed players down in the DR.   So  Newman had to go over to the DR, troubleshoot that situation and start scouting the International talent with the clean scouts that were left.

Gary Denbo's new title seemes to exclude him for anything but Player D, and he is a great teacher with good ideas.   The fact that Player Development is now a VP post shows a renewed commitment and one that is much needed.   Scouting and Player Development and not shiny names should be the lifeblood of the organization -- and btw, Denbo's new title gives us another clue about the yet to be revealed quadrant structure.

The only thing that really matters is an extended opportunity in the ML rather than: 1) signing a fungible veteran, like Drew or Capuano; 2) giving them less time to succeed than Roberts or Vazquez; 3) trading them for anything less than a star in their prime, unlike trading for an already declining Granderson or Vazquez.

So for me personally, it's all noise until Refs, Judge, Severino, and Bird are staples here.

Should be an interesting year, though, with all the picks intact and all those kids coming over.

It could be, as long as they are not traded for Cole Hamels or something similar, even though they would get mostly positive press and fan reaction for doing it.

That's why I would rather watch minor league games on YES, even with Kay doing them...

They have a chance to reset, if they just get out of their own way.

They tried Minor League Mondays on YES many years ago, and I was the only one watching - even it was always the shitty, starless AAA team that they'd show.

Trenton games used to be a local cable station when Hughes was there. No more.

I think Cash is on board with you or Jon Lester would have been a Yankee already.

3 errors for Refsnyder so far this ST.

Kid can hit but he needs to work on his fielding at 2B in SWB.

Pirela is making a case for himself to take Ryan's spot as the utility inf. Hope he never gives it back.

Very interested to see Tanaka and soon, CC on the hill.
