Yoan Moncada and The Yanks
Okay, so we're all eager to get Yoan Moncada signed and into the system. However; where exactly his big bat will play remains a question. The scouts who've seen him are pretty sure he's not a shortstop, so what would he be for the Yanks? He's just 19 and a switch hitter with power and speed. Though some are projecting him for 2nd or third, I'd do what the Yanks used to do with talented 19 year olds who couldn't play short, like Mickey Mantle and Bobby Murcer, and I'd make him a CF. If he ends up anywhere on the Bernie-Mickey axis we'll have another superstar.
As far as the infield positions go, the Yanks have Refsnyder more or less ready at 2B -- and I believe in his bat. But short and 3B are probably a little farther away. Neither Eric Jagielo nor Dante Bichette has staked a future claim yet, and Andujar is just going to hit High A this year. The talent at short is even more plentiful, yet farther down and some of them will end up as 2B's. So I think Moncada would comfortably slot in, ahead of Slade Heathcott, Mason Williams and Jake Cave in CF.
We'll see. It will also be interesting to see if they sign Olivera. If they do, another trade is coming.
BTW, Olivera is still waiting on MLB.

I wouldn't put him at 2B given the DP breakup risks. I am kind of surprised that Cano has escaped that.
Anyway, those are first world problems, and as such, I would love for them to have them.
I would hope, however, that if they are smart enough to get this done, that they don't let pre-existing contractual commitments guide their thinking.
Let's get him signed first. Your suggestion makes great sense in terms of figuring out where he plays best. I'd personally like to see him get comfortable with his hitting and also just with being here before trying him in different positions. A lot will depend on what he's like personally, and he is just a kid.
Yeah, get him signed, and let him and the other kids sort out the positions.
If for some reason they don`t get Moncada, they will sign Sheilds.
I already have anxiety over this, hopefully my defending of the front office is justified by winning this bidding war. We've seen a dramatic shift in their policy towards international players over the last year, first with Tanaka and then the IFA class.
Grabbing Moncada is a must, worry about his position later, just get it done.
Please no Shields
Buster Onley is saying some other teams view the Dodgers as strong favorites to sign him.
Stay away, Cash:
@jonmorosi: One rival GM said tonight he believes #Yankees are now actively pursuing James Shields.
@Joelsherman1: Like with Scherzer, I continue to hear #Yankees are not in play for significant fr-agt SP such as Shields
Moncada is only a necessity because the FO is so bad.
Moncada is a necessity because it is legitimately our only opportunity to grab a premier talent who only costs money and is 19 years old. The only other way to grab a similar talent at this age is to have a top 3 draft pick, which we will never have.
Not sure how that has anything to do with the FO.
Yeah, and they can't sign another major teenager till 2017. They have to do this now.
Sign him too.
@BenBadler: Vladimir Gutierrez, one of the best pitching prospects in Cuba, has left the Cuban team in Puerto Rico: http://t.co/QWnV3FOveQ
What's really awesome is the possible 3-4-5 of Moncada, Judge, & Bird. Probably a long shot, but if they did come through to close to full potential you wouldn't need much more than a couple of on-base guys and and one more RBI guy to have the makings of a devastating lineup.
What it has to do with the FO is that there is not one impact offense player on this roster. How is that possible when you spend $200+m every year and have been on notice that Stick's core was on its way out for 10 years?
That's why he is a necessity. Sure, you'd want him anyway, but because of the ineptitude, he is a beyond must signing.
"What it has to do with the FO is that there is not one impact offense player on this roster."
That's what happens when you whiff on as many first-rounders as they do and get cheap on international signings during a time when you're financial prowess could have (and should have) been a real asset there.
Mike
The only two position players that Cashman can claim credit for, Cano and Gardner, weren't 1st rounders.
They have spent most of their first rounders on pitchers (Hughes, Joba, IPK, Brackman) and have nothing to show for it.
Heathcott was a first, and ....
He had a potential impact bat in Montero and instead of trading him in a package for a more developed bat while his value was high, he said that pitching held the keys, and so he went for that.
He had Melky but has called him a 4th OFer since he traded him for um, pitching.
So I don't think it's just about first rounders.
Now, you're right in that I would love to know why they splurged on Ellsbury, McCann, and Beltran and let Abreu go.
Because of Tex's contract, really?
And if that's true, how are Headley and Ellsbury's contracts going to affect their future decisions.
It was insane to get Ellsbury, McCann and Beltran last year. We really needed those three firsts.
So here is the chance to start doing something they have completely slept on since Big George, signing multiple young, high-end Cubans.
It would seem to be a no-brainer because of:
1) their obvious need of talent;
2) the big local Cuban population;
3) the opening Cuba as a market is about when not if.
I realize that Hal is only viewed as good a businessman because of winning the hereditary lottery, but even a not so bright person has to see this.
It's also interesting that Cashman has liked to mention when he has been overruled, like the two Soriano moves, but he has never complained publicly about not signing the low hanging Cuban fruit.
The time to fix this is...NOW!

Wow, I hadn't read that before I posted it; I just blithely assumed it was solely about baseball. But it is about so much more.
My gf is a Korean-American adoptee as well. So it's really am especially moving article for me, in addition to the fact that I hope he becomes a fixture for the NYY.
LNJ -- My children are Chinese-American adoptees, so we share that interest. Cheers!
We do!
