Yanks Moncada Stuff
So it's come out today that MLB and not the US Government has been keeping Yoan Moncada and Hector Oliva as well as others off the market. This will probably change soon, under the new Commissioner. But he's only been on the job for 2 days, so, though it will probably be in plenty of time for the Yanks to get Moncada, it may not be this week. The Yanks were heavily in favor of installing the guy, and I'm pretty sure that was with the faith that he wouldn't aim at them as often as Comrade Selig did.

That's funny I was thinking the same thing. I hope it comes down soon.

His free agency is imminent after a government source said he no longer needs unblocking license.
let the countdown begin!!!
Seriously, this is the true test of the direction of this franchise. Their decision-making is suboptimal, at best, so spending has to compensate.
Ichiro Suzuki: Lifer or get a life?
The bidding for Yoan should be interesting. Just about any team that signs him will be paying the 100% tax to MLB. We shall see who is willing to pay the piper, knowing that Yoan probably spends 1-2 seasons in the Minors.
YahooSports is reporting he could be cleared in two weeks:

This shouldn't be a true competition.
When you are a franchise that regularly throws away money on aging/declining players, or overpays Ellsbury to the extent they have, or handsomely pays Tanaka despite the mileage on the arm, you CANNOT let Moncado go.
If you do, it's because you don't understand true value.
He might not be all about the money. He might want to play with Puig or something. Who knows
Then they fucked up a lot earlier in the process.
That's already a foregone conclusion, LINJ. The fact that they're just now heavy favorites for a Cuban is a testament to that.
OK, yeah.
It's a shame that it has come to this, but they have so squandered their built-in advantages for so long as a result of rank incompetence from the top three (or four if you include Joey G.), that they have no room for error in these types of decisions.
I never thought this was possible back in 2005-06.
But we are where we are.
I mostly blame it on ownership's cluelessness about how the new CBA would change the baseball landscape as far as building winners goes. That they passed on Darvish only to go all out on Tanaka shows they at least realized that mistake after the "why aren't our minor league teams producing talent?" meetings during the 2013 season.
I'm hoping for the same result here.
I blame Cashman as much as ownership because:
1) he completely missed the looming (telegraphed by the withdrawal of both PED and amphetamines) sea change creating offensive scarcity; and
2) he has sucked at overseeing development. It's that failure that has made the free agent misses so impactful.
But they keep him despite his abundant failures, and Hal thinks he is doing a great job.
So up is down, and I blame them all.
I would have to know how much he asked for in draft and international spending versus what ownership allotted him and how much he did or didn't push ownership to be in on guys like Puig and Darvish before I can blame him for the lack of big-time international signings.
I agree he placed far too little emphasis on offense while overrating pitching, and it's put the team in a hole.
More money would have helped, but teams without money have many more draft/development successes.

They are so when are desperate for pitching depth that they signed Scott Baker, yikes.
This has just been a dead week for the teams I write about...
