Rangers: JT Miller
Today, Larry Brooks is pimping the idea that the Rangers need to make a decision about JT Miller by the trade deadline next month. That's ridiculous. Miller is one of their few current players who isn't under a big contract or scheduled to get one any time soon. Thus Miller is incredibly valuable to a cap-strapped team like the Rangers.
What concerns me most in hearing JT's name in trade talks is that I don't think they would trade him for a third line C like Vermitte. I think they'd only trade him for another big piece. And first, I don't think they need another big piece, and second I don't know how they would afford one under the cap.
As it is, the Rangers are headed for very tough decisions over MZA and Hags, and even MSL. They need players like JT and Fast to hold the fort and grow as they wait for Duke and Buch, and the others.

Is he floating that at the behest of someone inside the organization?
It's mindbogglingly that the best team in NY at development wouldn't center on what they have done best.
Feels like they're loading up for a run.
But it's really important that they don't give up the young cost controlled guys when they do it.
I does make you ask How much do they value JT ? I don't think he's a favorite of AV.
Feels like JT has some fans in the organization and maybe waiting for AV to come around. The winning streak started when JT started playing.
Playoffs are a crap shoot to some extent. Loading up is often a fool's errand. The smart play is to put yourself in a position to win as many years as possible, especially when you are good at development.
I think they probably do need another C who can win faceoffs and a 6th D, but those should not be asset intensive deals.
I think AV is tougher on Miller then the other young guys. Always seems like if Miller has a bad game, he's out of the lineup the next game.
That said, the Rangers stumbled on something during the last game. Moore centering Miller and Hags. Speed, grit, and a decent Center in Moore that will win a fair amount of face-offs.
I really feel that the establishment of a 3rd line that is a threat, like we had last year, will go a long way of determining how far the rangers advance in the playoffs.
They obviously have needs, but if the price is important young pieces, I would rather lose.
No one ever accused Larry of understanding the cap
To make a run for the Cup, you need a goalie who can carry a team for several series in a row. Not just a no. 1 but someone special. The Rangers believe they have that in Lundqvist, who is in his early 30's. He will start to decline in the next couple of years, so they will likely go for it all in the next two years or so. That doesn't mean they should pull another Middleton for Hodge (or to use the Bruins as an example MacLeish for Walton and Leach for Vadnais), but I wouldn't be surprised if they did make a move or two. The flip side is that Billy Harris for Goring won several cups for NYI.
Could be, but over-leveraging is why most good things end.
Larry B knows nothing, he's a star lover and given his choice would trade any young player for a big name. Knows nothing about managing the cap and the need to have youth and role players, over a team of stars. His rumors rarely pan out.
