To save LINJ the trouble of repeating himself, this is a major test for this front office. Did it learn from past mistakes, or will it continue to not exploit something ripe for exploitation?
Thanks, Mike. Typing can be pretty freakin' tiring. ;)
As an aside, Sherman poses a sort of interesting question today about whether or not A-Rod will outperform Headley and Jones. I think the answer is yes, as long as he can stay on the field, and of course, is put on the field.
Signing Tanaka was definitely necessary, even with the mileage, because they have failed at developing starters, BUT, I thought in real time that he was the victim of mismanaging.
Girardi over-extended him because the offense was so inept that even the serial brilliant games that he pitched were tied or within a run, and they would have been completely out of the WC very early in the season without the difference he made.
I suspect that is a large part of why he tore the ulnar collateral ligament.
There are no such issues with Moncada. He stands there as a big eraser of their inability to develop position players.
I don't know what the high bid will be, but whatever it is, they have to beat it.
With the Cuban population in the area (Union City, etc.), he will pay for himself soon enough.
This is off topic, but since you noted that article by Joel Sherman............
I wonder if A-Rod can even stay on the filed, even as a DH, this year. At his age, being away from live game-pitching for most of the past 2 seasons. Add in the multiple hip surgeries, and it's a tough call.
And of course there is the PED factor :)
I believe a healthy A-Rod, even at this age, can out-hit Headley. But can he stay healthy?

It is just that. A test of their intelligence.
No brainer. Its more a proof they're not morons.
Yes, even though the case for "morons" has been building up of late.
Tanaka move was brilliant, so was the IFA splurge, and the draft looks like another useful one.
On the contrary, last year's UFA splurge, and their propensity to double down on shot veterans argues for their foolishness.

I don't know. ARod, who I've tried to keep off the blog, hasn't played in a long time, and wasn't that great last time he was able.

Back on topic.
The Yankees actions with Moncada will tell us loud and clear what their FO is thinking.
