This Week on the Blog
Okay, this week has to be better for our teams -- doesn't it? Between doing nothing and losing games and Hank, it was lousy. So let's take a look and how it can possibly be better..
Yanks - The Yankees are now free to sign Yoan Moncada and had better. There was a rumor last night that Moncada had been seen at the Himes Complex, which is the Yankees' place in Tampa. Let's hope it was really him. There are also a few more Cubans becoming available and they should be in on the best. Btw, a lot of the young players are already in Tampa.
Giants - After the loss of Mrs. Mara which obviously dominated the thought and feelings of everyone in the organization, the Giants have to get going on their salary cap work this week. Expect some salary cuts, releases, restructures and perhaps an extension or three coming soon.
Rangers - Rangers just lost to Nashville and have another game tomorrow. Stepan was out and they lost Fast. So there may be a call up on the way for tomorrow. Talbot was just okay today, and he has to play better if they're going to muddle through this period with Hank down. Also, trades are probably on the way, so they better protect Duclair and Buchnevich.
Knicks - Knicks have gotten back to losing, and now it seems like Amar'e wants a buyout. They too need to try to make some more trades to create cap room for next year. They need a whole lot of help.
In all, we should see some player movement if nothing else. Let's hope that the Rangers can recapture their winning momentum, and that the Knicks can continue losing. Have a great week, everyone!

Cubans and Refs can expand the fanbase and with it the revenue base, while helping them win.
If Cashman can't explain that to the suits, he has yet another shortcoming.
No one really cares whether or not declining near-stars can regain occasional flashes of their old form.
"No one really cares whether or not declining near-stars can regain occasional flashes of their old form."
I honestly think this reality is lost on the higher-ups within the Yankee organization.
Maybe, Mike. I try to be optimistic unitl it's no longer tenable!
One more thing on another topic.
Last night, the Ch.7 in NY sports news reader said, referring to Stever Kerr while showing the Knicks/GS "high"lights: "Oh, what might have been."
Seriously? Maybe Kerr wins a few more games than Fischer, but if she actually thinks that this team would have been a big winner with Kerr as the coach, she is stealing money from her employer.
Jed Weisberger
@jedleyq After processing some information, a lot of facts point to the #Yankees signing Yoan Moncada, no matter the penalty.
Someone asked in reply what about the Dodgers and Red Sox, to which he said: "The others will not take that big a gamble."
I really, really hope he's right. They don't have a choice if they're serious about developing from within.
So Dolan answers his emails...
NBA must be thrilled.
Who's Jed Weisberger?
How about the balls on Dolan deducing that the guy is an Alcoholic...so embarrassing...hopefully other emails surface showing him to be racist or something so he can sell
One of my buddies got thrown out of MSG, because the baby overheard him saying that Dolan was a bad owner. They called city hall for then mayor b and he was put on probation by his employer for that... (It was/is) the mayors company :)
Unfortunately, Dolan isn't going anywhere. Several members of the Dolan family sit on the MSG board, and the stock is up about 50% from it's May 2014 lows, so the people that matter most are probably pretty happy overall.
At least he has finally hired someone who seems to have a first-rate basketball mind, and reportedly has not interfered to date.
Hal may be more socially appealing and be able to keep his emotions in check, but he cannot make that claim.
Padres in on Moncada in a big way?
Maybe. I still think we're getting him and the Padres are just trying to give their fanbase another pump.
Probably true. Either way, they have given their fanbase a pretty big offseason.
I don't see the Padres spending huge $$$ including penalties for a player who is at least 2 years away when they have just spent very significantly from their standpoint to get next year's team into the dance. If they have $$$ lying around, they should think about whether they'll need one or two rentals at the trade deadline.
So Alex apologized for cheating. Did the GM ever do the same?
Oh, and while shoveling snow (really ice) yesterday, I heard Francesa that while interviewing Joey G. and Cashninja last week, they made it clear that Drew is the starting 2B.
The Rsngers needed that win.
They really did, though they tried to give it away.

Big non-Ranger trade:

Saw that. Wonder if this will get the trade market going.
Moncada expected to make decision by Feb 23 -- supposedly has one concrete offer in hand and some follow up workouts scheduled next week --
Another Cuban name to know, and one we also need to target is 18 y/o 6'3 RHP Yadiel Alvarez --- 93-96 with a plus slider and good changeup -- pitched in the DR today in front of a lot of scouts -- won't be eligible for another 1-2 months thougb but he's the pitcher they need to target, not the Yoan guy Dbacks signed
I can't recall a more important, recent watershed moment for this franchise.
There is either hope, or it is a toilet bowl.
Betances and Pineda are fine with A-Rod:

How could that be? We're repeatedly told that he is evil...
I still wonder if A-Rod even makes it out of Spring Training in 1 piece.
Nearly $8 million to spend on this summer's draft for the Yankees. Let's hope they do.
http://www.nj.com/yankees/index.ssf/2015/02/yankees_have_nearly_8_million_in_bonus_money_for_2.html
i don't see why they wouldn't spend - clearly this past IfA indicates there renewed willingness to spend on amateur talent -- hopefully Moncada and Alvarez can be brought into the fold As well
There about six important contributors that may not make it out of spring training in one piece. That's the that's the landmine of a roster that has been created.
actually, with th allowable extra 5% added, it's over 8M and should see the return of prep picks.
