Yanks Draft: So Far So What?

The Yanks today popped a prep pitcher who may or may not be a tough sign, then proceeded to draft a bunch of college arms, followed by a bunch of collegiate position players.   So, was this a good use of the 8 picks they had today?   It's too soon to tell.   If for example, they saved enough money to draft and sign some higher upside guys tomorrow, then perhaps it was.    Or if some of these college players pan out and move fast through the system, perhaps it was.    But, if the ludicrous draft spending rules that came in have prevented the Yanks from taking players they wanted and forced them to take players they wanted less, then they still have problem.

But the truth is, they probably took more college guys this year because their pool money was much lower, and by taking more than last year, they were saving more money from picks 4-10 than they needed to last year.

Yet, this can still be a good draft for the Yanks, and here's why.   The Yanks draft pool money is under 4 million this year due to their lack of high picks.   While that remains true, it also remains true that only one player chosen already or tomorrow, has to make it to pay for the whole class in cost retrieval for the Yanks.  If more than one player makes it, the class is more than paid for.

For it to be a great draft, a bunch of players have to make it and save the Yanks millions upon millions.

I feel like they got some pitchers who will pitch in the bigs today.   And I'm glad that the college bats they got have the vary OBP skills so much of the system seams to lack right now.  We'll see if the Yankee development team can bleed it out of them, or if they can provide an important influx and influence starting with this season's short season teams.

Tomorrow should be fun.  If they start taking preps, it will be business as usual.
