Yankees Draft: They Should Break The Draft Rules, Too
The Yanks are reportedly set to smash their spending limits in IFA this year, and sustain the fines. They should do that in the draft, too.
The other day a compensatory pick was traded for the first time I can recall. First off, this is a market the Yanks have to get into as I told you and them a few years ago when the rules changed. The pick went for a relief prospect and the Yanks have plenty of them as well as guys like Cervelli. It also added a chunk to the new team's draft budget. If a deal like that cannot be made by the Yanks this week, and if the draft is as deep as they are saying it is, the Yanks should go ahead and blow by the 10% overage that will cost them next year's first. They would have wasted it on a free agent next year, anyway. And they should also start trading for those comp picks whenever they need to or it makes sense. They've let this commissioner and a bunch of fly by night small market owners squeeze their nuts for too long. If they still have any feeling in them, the Yanks should do what the Yanks were designed to do -- damn the rules and buy big talent.
