Yankees: Building a Better Bullpen

Dellin Betances is opening a lot of eyes, and some people are even suggesting he should be the next Yankee closer.  But why?   Right now Dellin is absolutely deadly in two inning, high leverage situations.   Why put him in the largely ceremonial closer role?   Getting 6 outs is more valuable than getting three, and locking down two innings is better than one.   Why not keep Dellin right where he is, and bring up more guys who can work more than one inning?  Ramirez pitched 3 innings yesterday in AAA.   Perhaps he could give us two innings of dominant relief on the days we want to rest Dellin.  I'm not sure if Burawa is a two inning guy or not, but if we had three we'd be in great shape.

Mark Montgomery has often been used in closer roles, and he might make a good next closer.   But because all games that offer save situations aren't really that competitive, closer, who get paid partly on the save numbers they put up, end up ceremonially closing games where anyone on the roster probably could have.   The reason Mo was such a super dominant closer was because he was way too much pitcher for the somewhat ceremonial nature of the role.

And maybe if we could get someone like Montgomery to act as closer, the Yanks could make David Robertson available for more high leverage work.   Right now he's getting a little overused in the pile up saves role.

As you know, they are using Betances in the Jamesian way.

If they are going to move him, it should be back to the rotation, probably not this year though.

They should (and should have)given Ramirez a shot, but like most managers, Girardi has a circle of trust, and Kelley is going to be back in it as soon as he is off the DL.

As good as they have been with relievers, to the exclusion of every other area of development, the LOOGY white whale syndrome has bitten the GM again. Thorton needs to go, despite the stupid contract.

Loogies are a waste. Goodness trumps handedness.
