Yankees Draft Starts Today

Here we go: sort of.   MLB will run the first two rounds of their Rule IV Draft tonight, but the Yanks will not pick till #55 in the second round.   That's their only pick of the night.   Now a few years ago, they were in a similar situation and took Dante Bichette Jr. with pick 51 then really started swinging for the fences on day 2.   That's probably what will happen this year.   They'll either pick a slot guy tonight, whether that's a college guy or a prep, and do more heavy lifting in the next few days - or they will pick whoever the BPA is - and we'll know something different might be up for day 2 and day there, where the Yanks will have the normal allotment of picks.

Lots of waiting around for 55, so enjoy the Tanaka game, the minor league games and Giant Media day.

I'm sure there will be more news as the day rolls along.

There is no excuse for overdrafting with so few picks.

Sure there is. We have the second lowest draft budget for the first ten rounds. So if we want to get some savings to go after better players after 10, we'll overdraft college seniors for a few top top ten rounds.

And we still have 39 picks. It's not like we only have a few.

Still, we should break the rules and just go BPA all over the place.

But if you seek savings creating players early, there is the chance that some interesting BPAs won't be there later on, right?

That's true. And I'm all for going BPA and paying the fines. I just don't know if the Yanks will. They haven't done it yet. Nor have they traded for any of those traceable 1's to try to grow their budget and get at better talent.
