Clarkin Goes Today
Along with Severino and a few others, Ian Clarkin is one of the most interesting pitchers in the Yankee system. Clarkin has a fastball/curveball/change mix, and has a chance, and indeed, outings where all three are plus. And as I mentioned a few weeks ago, he has sick separation of speeds between the three pitches. So, with Ian, as it is with all pitching prospects, he just has to master that fastball control and he'll start to move. It shouldn't be long, as he's been able to get his strike ones fairly frequently already.
On the other hand, Bryan Mitchell is going for Trenton today, and he's having a poor first half. Most of that is fastball control. His stuff is literally as good as anyone's in the system, but he's just inconsistent.
A few years ago, before the change from Nardi to Gil Patterson as pitching czar, the Yanks had a crazy loss of fastball control up and down the chain. This was when Banuelos was adding velo and suddenly started walking everyone. I don't know if it has or hasn't gotten better under Patterson, but it doesn't seem to have for Bryan Mitchell, and getting him straightened out should be an organizational imperative. Tommy Phelps is his PC in Trenton.
SI is playing a double header today. They're throwing Agnew-Weiland in the first game and Jordan Cote in the second. We'll see if relieving in Charleston was Cote's problem or if he's back to being an immaculate starter today. Agnew-Weiland was interesting last year.
They don't have the line-ups up yet, because the fricking Mets haven't turned their's in, so I don't know if the Bo Thompson era is starting today or not, but I hope it is.
