Down to the Deadline

The Yanks are still working hard on at least four players: Williams, Rutckyj, Dezse and Viramontes as tomorrow's deadline approaches. Things are apparently looking good on the first two but not on Dezse and Viramontes, a pair or projectable power righties. You can never guess what will happen at the deadline, though, so who knows what could change by then? Hopefully, I'll have time to take a look at the draft class as it looks now on Tuesday. Go Yanks!

The offense is problematically inconsistent, and their advance scouts, if they have them, suck.

Who knows if it's the the advance scouts or the team just expecting to be able to win too easily.

At 7:09 AM, Blogger Rich said...

That's true, I did blame the advance scouts too much.

I think the players are the bigger problem, and the age of key players may be a part of that.

Rich would you be in favor of Crawford next year? I know we have fallen in love w Gardner but it seems like he is better suited for a 4th OF role. Is this the real Swish? I think he is a good influence on the clubhouse myself... I guess the real question is will Hal allow the expenditure on Lee and Crawford both... Do we have any major dollars coming off this year?

I would as long as the contract isn't ridiculous. For example, I wouldn't give him the same contract that Holliday got.

I understand the concerns about Gardner (is it his thumb or is it a correction), but he doesn't make enough money to matter in the decision.

If they want Crawford, and they want to keep the payroll at or near $200m, then they likely have to trade Granderson or Swisher. It won't be easy to trade Granderson (and it would likely be selling low), and as you point out, is Swisher having an out of context season, or will his improvement be enduring?

Lee is obviously the first priority, and cost $20m+ a year. Vazquez contract will offset half of that.

The next question is what does Pettitte do? If he stays, that's around $12m more they will have to spend.

Hughes and Joba are arbitration eligible and will probably get something like $5m for Hughes and $3m for Joba.

So if Pettitte retires, and they do something like promote Nova, then they may have some extra money w/o trading any OF. If he comes back, I think they would have to trade an OF to bring in Crawford.

The reason I now want Crawford is because the age of the offense is starting to concern me. Have we seen the best of Jeter, A-Rod, and Posada, and if so, how much further will they fall?

Is the Granderson trade a bust, or will he bounce back with Long's help?

IDK the answer to any of these questions, but Crawford, who will only be 29 next season, would be great insurance, and studies have shown that speedy players age better.

It's rapidly becoming time to face the truth about Jeter.

keithlaw: Yanks agreed to terms with Evan Rutckyj, 16th-round pick

"It's rapidly becoming time to face the truth about Jeter."

I was wrong. It's past time. He's killing this team.

btw, On with Francesa today, Reese said the player he most wants to see is Cruz.

Great game by Warren.

Phil, you still updating this thing?

Yankees seem to be close to signing shortstop Tzu-Wei Lin from Taiwan. Is this the guy you mentioned earlier this year?

I'm sorry about Hank's loss, and I can relate to his pain, but when the hell did he become the boss?

NYT

And when he says:

"We don’t make a lot of money because of revenue sharing, and we don’t shy away from paying salaries.”

Who is he kidding? It's a freakin' cash cow with equity constantly accruing.

Girardi is mediocre. Staying with AJ tonight is stupid.

Trade A.J. to a National League team, even if it means eating a ton of salary. He's barely a fifth starter at this point.

I hope Hughes improves enough next season to be at least a No. 3 starter, because we're going to need him to be that much better -- especially if Pettitte retires.

Nova gives me hope and with another strong start, he may give Girardi no choice but to keep him in the bigs.

At 5:45 PM, Blogger Rich said...

John

Do you mean in the rotation, because with rosters expanding Sept. 1st, he is absolutely staying here, likely in the rotation, maybe through the playoffs.

Glad Hughes is at least trying to throw the changeup more. When he gets command of it and the curve, he's going to be a very good pitcher.

At 9:40 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Good job by AJ, but let's see what he can do v. a real offense.

I have <0 faith in him.

SS Tzu-Wei Lin and the Yankees go their separate ways: http://tinyurl.com/25n93by

Another IFA, another golden opportunity the Yankees invent yet another way to mess up.

At 11:29 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Mike, he's 5'8". I don't know if you've been following the system this year, but we're pretty loaded and added good stuff in the draft. There are still plenty of targets out there, so don't worry.

At 3:29 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wasn't he the one you were pretty high on earlier this year?

The more shortstop prospects, the better. Gives you a greater chance that at least one of them will have a Yankee bat (and glove).

At 3:41 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

BTW, not signing Sano and especially Chapman look to be very poor decisions early on.

At 7:36 PM, Blogger Michael said...

what is going on with the frugality here? Are we saving all the funds for Crawford and Lee this winter???

At 9:28 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I certainly wanted Chapman.

Lee could be a very risky signing given the price.

There probably won't be the money for Crawford and Lee.

Of course, it all comes down to how much they overpay Jeter.

At 6:13 PM, Blogger Michael said...

really like the Rosenfels pick up!

At 1:52 PM, Blogger Rich said...

AJ continues to suck and what's worse is that Girardi pretends that he doesn't.

At 4:01 PM, Blogger Michael said...

AJ needs to be traded to Atlanta or some other NL team this winter..

At 1:04 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Nova is their 2nd or 3rd best starter.

At 4:10 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Without Pettite pitching well tonight in Trenton, the Yankees are done and will get beat by TX in the ALDS.

At 12:59 PM, Blogger Rich said...

If I had to choose between keeping Cashman or Towers, I'm not sure which one I would choose.

At 10:23 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Girardi and his moronic pinch running sucks, as does Gaudin.

Go the Cubs, please.

At 10:33 PM, Blogger Rich said...

More idiocy from the manager.

At 5:33 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Girardi is a bad manager.

Bring in LaRussa.

Enjoy Chitown Joe!

At 9:19 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Girardi gets worse by the day. The Onion couldn't make up stuff that would mirror the crazy way he is managing.

At 3:56 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Winning the WC will be fine.

Let TX and TB battle it out while we take care of the Twins.

At 10:32 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Get rid of the entire coaching staff minus Long and Pena.

At 1:40 PM, Blogger Rich said...

With regard to the NYG, now that they have cut Kehl, it is becoming more apparent that they can't draft LBs. Maybe Goff continues to develop. Maybe Sintim does as well. If not...
