Three More Yankee Power Prospects
After the three blue chippers we started with, we get into a lot of projection. I'm gonna stop numbering them and just do groups of three. If I wanted to be conservative I could go with the older prospects like Juan Miranda (who we'll get to) but instead in this group we'll go with three of the youngest, who I think reflect the clarifications the Yanks have made in their draft strategies.
*Austin Romine 18 - another catcher with big power. He had some surgery this past year, so he wasn't scouted down the stretch enough by the draft sites most of us follow. So it was a surprise when the Yanks took him in the second round. It didn't stay a surprise as Damon Oppenheimer and Mark Newman have both talked a lot about this kid's loud bat. He takes his walks, too. He didn't get much action during the GCL season as a "late sign" but I believe he did double in his first AB.
* Chase Weems 18 - yet another catcher, but this one a lefty with a sweet stroke. In fact, both catchers they Yanks took in the top 10 rounds of the recent draft fit the "patience and pop" profile the Yanks are looking for these days. As you know, for whatever reason there are not a lot of lefty catchers who can hit at all, and Chase is a lefty catcher who they believe with both hit and stay at catcher.
*Carmen Angelini 18 - a shortstop the Yanks paid way over slot for because he has patience and pop and looks like he can stay at short. Angelini is a legitimately great athlete, like Austin Jackson or Derek Jeter, and he slugged over .700 in HS. The Yanks gave him all that money because they believe he is one of those guys. We will not dispute that.
UPDATE: I've been told that Angelini has been impressive at "instructs" this month.
Three more tomorrow!
