They Live By Night (RKO,1949) Directed by Nicholas Ray and starrring Farley Granger, Cathy O'Donnell, and Howard da Silva. This is a very interesting "doomed from the start" flick. It was Ray's first and though it was made in the late `40's it was set in the depression. It's the story of young lovers, one of whom is an escaped convicy who owes debts that can never be repaid to a couple of crooked leeches. Chicarnaw, the one eyed baddy played by Frank da Silva is especially memorable. The cinematography is just what you'd expect from a movie called "They Live By Night." Good stuff. It's makes a good double feature with "Gun Crazy." Check it out.
