America

America is another group, like Three Dog Night, that critics somehow reviled. It's especially odd considering they made tuneful pop and were often produced by Beatle Genius Guy, George Martin. Actually, I think critics used to bash the lyrics. This is pretty much why the smartest people you know are not music critics. Lyrics don't need to be Byron, Shelley or Wordsworth. They need to be SINGABLE. If they're clever, more power to them, but if you can sing "alligator lizards in the air" when your driving, then mission accomplished by the songwriters.

Originally consisting of Gerry Beckley, Dan Peek and Dewey Bunnell, America started cooking in the early-`70's. Peek eventually split (cause the other two were singing all the hits) and became a top Christian/Country guy or something. In all, America, is another one of the early seventies groups that were making great post Beatles/Beach Boys/Bacharach pop.

BTW, the America logo was designed by the late, great Phil Hartman before he went into comedy.
