More Yanks

3 Yankee Pitchers take spots onBA's Top 8 HBL Prospects list.

Number 1! Joba Chamberlain! Joba, as we've recounted absolutely dominated, throwing mid to upper 90's gas as well as an average change and a slurve. He posted a 42-3 K/BB record. Big time prospect going forward.

Number 4! Jeff Marquez! Jeff struggled some, after an injury filled regular season, but his 92-94 mph sinker still produced tons of grounders and his change was above average. He needs to work on his breaking stuff, and his command of the zone. The Yanks want him to throw more 4 seamers going forward in hopes of raising his K rate and making him a true power pitcher.

Number 8! Ian Kennedy! Ian had one terrible start, but was otherwise his usual consistent self. He produces K's with his pitchability rather than straight gas as he sat 88-92 with the fastball. He's just good and projects as a #3. His first round pick will be questioned till he makes it, but going conservative in the first before swinging for the fences in the other rounds made some sense for the Yanks.

In a recent column, Murray Chass used fielding percentage and errors to compare the defensive abilities of various first baseman. I wrote him to suggest that he use a player's zone rating instead.

Here's his reply:

No, thank you. The metrics maniacs have done their best to kill the enjoyement of baseball, and I don't care to be a part of it. If your new-fangled statistics demostrate that Giambi is a better first baseman than the players I mentioned, let me know.

Chass is an idiot. Most who treat stats like they are voodoo, don't realze that their the non-statistical beliefs about baseball really call for a good bit of voodoo.
