More Yanks
The Ten Yankee pitching prospects I am most excited about.
1. Philip Hughes - This is the ultimate no brainer, outstanding fastball control, outstanding curve, nasty change and he's still working on cutters and a split. I wish every Yankee prospect would work as hard as Hughes has. We'll mee two who haven't down the list some.
2. Tyler Clippard - he's in second place because of level of development, most of the other guys have better fastballs, but TyClip's got a terrific curve and secondary stuff. His fastball isn't 95, but his command of it took a big step forward this year.
3. Dellin Betances - the first of a pair of 18 year olds who will probably move through the system together. Betances has a great fastball that projects to add velocity and a great curve, and a developing change. His command surprised everyone this year. He's apparently a hard worker, and the Yanks seem excited about his future.
4. Zach McAllister - the second 18 year old. Not as tall as Betances, but thicker with a classic power pitcher's body. Since coming to the Yanks he's added velocity and is learning a curve to add to his already impressive change. Now they're comparing him to Hughes at 18. That's great, let's hope he keeps up the good work.
5. Christian Garcia - the first of a pair who may not be working hard enough. He still has a great fastball and a great curve. His change has come along. In other words, he has completely dominant stuff, he's just not consistently dominating like Hughes has been. 2007 is a big year for him. He has front of the rotation stuff, but now it's a question of wanting it.
6. Joba Chamberlain - big power pitcher who had some arm pain and fell in the draft. He has a big time fastball, slider and developing change. He's got a big body and is a college pitcher who still projects because his delivery in college was inconsistent. The Yanks have him in Hawaii now and he's shown "some things" to be excited about.
7. Jeff Marquez - the second of the possible party boys. He added a good 4 seamer to his sinker this year, and his K's started going up. He has good, good stuff, but needs to prove he's a big time prospect in 2007.
8. Angel Reyes - slender lefty with an explosive fastball, good curve and developing change. He wants to be like Santana and Liriano. I don't think you need to be told, I am all for that.
9. George Kontos - another power arm. He was impressive when I saw him on TV his summer.
10. Mark Melancon - power reliever with a big fastball, big curve and big change. Could be the closer of the future.
Bubbling under: Kennedy, Cox, Abreu, Tim Norton, Nova, White, Horne, Robertson, Gil, and Castillo.
