This Week on the Blog

Alright, the Yanks had another up and down week, the Giants moved pieces around at the bottom of their roster, the Rangers kids hit Traverse City, and the Knicks just chilled.  Let's take a look at the coming week.

Yankees: Aaron Judge is swinging a bat again.  That's great news, and we could even see him back later this week. Masahiro Tanaka is looking like and ACE again, which is super great, becaue Luis Severino still isn't.  JA Happ is also looking pretty terrific, and Luke Voit is pulling a Shane Spencer. We'll see what kind of effect getting Judge back will have, but the Yanks are still probably looking at a Wild Card game.  Make sure it's at the Stadium.

Giants: The Giants start the Pat Shurmur era tomorrow at Met-Life. As such, and because they kept the O and D pretty vanilla during the preseason games - we have no idea what they'll look like. This is really the first time since Jim Fassel took over, that we'll go into game one having no clue. The other big factor that's been missing is that OBJ and Saquon, their two best players will finally be full go. The D; however, will be missing Olivier Vernon, and that will have to be schemed, somehow.  Likewise, pass coverage was scary bad in the preseason, and that, too, will have to be schemed. So we have no idea what to expect, though the culture appears to be about a million times better than it was last year - and that's an important start.

Rangers: Many, but not all of the Rangers best prospects, are in Traverse City, Michigan, for the annual prospect tournament.  They played their first game yesterday, and it was a back and forth affair, that they lost. But they did score 2 power play goals. Many of their best prospects are still in Russia, Sweden or College, so this really wasn't a measure of the system.  Also, Lias scored a goal and doesn't seem to have thrown anything into the crowd. Training camp probably opens this week.

Knicks:  The Knicks are still chilling.  And it seems like Puma is pretty desperate to sign up Kevin Knox, and that would be cool given their historical link to Clyde. I think their camp starts closer to October 1, though it seems like they've been practicing all summer.

So there it is.  Yanks need to take care of business. The Giants need to get on the good foot.  The Rangers need to build chemistry in Traverse City, and the Knicks need to keep cool.  Have a great week!

Shit OL continues to destroy any chance at offensive effectiveness and with it Eli’s career. I thought they could have left in TE more. Barkley has no room and that’s what I have feared.

Indeed, OL looks terrible, so let's see if they can adjust.

Wake me the next time Emgram makes a play.

When it inevitably comes down to it, keep Bettcher and fire Shurmur. Mara won’t though.

Barkley was kind of Barry Sanders-like, getting limited for for a while...then boom.

I’m surprised they didn’t throw to him more.

Bortles isn’t stellar, but they D was still impressive.

Moving on:
Andujar and Torres are so skilled at swinging the bat.

I still believe in their offensive talent, but I have been massively wrong about both Sanchez and Bird this year…,.to date.

Looks like Judge is done after five rounds of BP outside. Didn't show any signs of discomfort with the wrist. Hit a handful of long homers -- @eboland11

Barring something crazy happening between now and the end the regular season Bird and Gray cannot be on the postseason roster.

Fundamentally flawed. That's the best way I can describe the Yankees' offense this year. Sure, the pitching was bad (hope this doesn't hurt Loaisiga's confidence), but outside of a garbage-time grand slam by Didi, this team got shut down by a bunch of guys who were replacement-level at best. I don't get to watch enough games to even begin to figure out why they struggle so mightily with RISP, but it's a problem that needs to be addressed this offseason.

They have two hitters, Andujar and Torres, who keep their hands back enabling them to keep their bat in the zone longer, and use the whole field. Stanton and Judge have other skills, like insane hard contact ability, that also makes them unique. The rest of their hitters don’t use the whole field often enough and seem too intent on hitting him home runs in almost all counts and game situations.

I think they kind of have to sign Machado, as he’s another Torres/Andujar type IMO, plus if you get him to play third you’re getting good defense there. I’m a proponent of keeping Andujar no matter what, so move him to first. I don’t think they should give up on Bird, but he needs to basically go to “hitting school” and rediscover whatever it was he had before all the injuries.

(This is Mike in Mississippi BTW, in case it wasn’t obvious.)

Andujar needs to get off of 3B if/when Machado signs with the Yankees. He is a below average SS but a plus 3B.

Andujar is a waste at 1B with his tremendous arm strength. Put him in LF and replace Gardner.

Sanchez should learn 1B as catching is not for him. I am sure we will hear the Realmuto rumors heat up in the offseason.

The biggest thing they should do is trade Didi for a pitcher.

The other thing is they should do move on from Gardner.

I’m good with signing Machado, but that may limit which young players they can ultimately give a big contract to.

At 11:59 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

They need the chips it would take to acquire Realmuto in order to acquire a front-end starter. Don't see that happening.

Andujar has never played the outfield. First would likely be less of a transition.

Sanchez is a very good catcher at everything but except blocking pitches. I’m not moving him because of that

Little Stein:

“Aaron Boone has done a good job dealing with all these moving parts and certainly has the respect of the players,’’ Steinbrenner told The Post via email Thursday, when the Yankees were off ahead of a nine-game homestand that starts with the downtrodden Blue Jays on Friday night. “Overall we have been happy with the choice.’’

...

“The injuries we have had the last few months have been of significant duration, and have affected some of our key players,’’ Steinbrenner wrote. “The team has done well persevering but losing players like Sanchez, Judge, Chapman, etc. does have an impact. The good news is that we appear to be getting healthy again. Slowly, but surely.’’

At 3:30 PM, Blogger Rich said...

“Look, it’s Aaron Judge, so I think guys will be excited knowing what he means to the guys,” Boone said. “So hopefully it is something that just his presence and being on the bench, and maybe getting into a game, is something that can be something that uplifts the guys.”

It’s kind of bizarre that some mediots talk about what they will do with McCutcheon when Judge gets back. It’s beyond obvious that Gardner is cooked. So he has to become a defensive replacement. He should not be back next year either.

If they get as good at ML development as they have been at mL development recently, and continue that post-Denbo (too early to know for sure, I am not of the view that spending is critical.

Yankees on track to stay under luxury tax threshold

According to Ronald Blum, the Yankees are indeed on track to stay under the $197M luxury tax threshold this season. I’ve been doing my best to keep tabs on the team’s luxury tax payroll situation all season, and I’m glad to have some confirmation. I had the payroll at $191.8M (without bonuses) in my last estimate. Blum’s source in the commissioner’s office has the payroll at $192.1M. I’m quite proud my estimate is within half-a-million bucks.

The Yankees will have to pay out some playing time bonuses (CC Sabathia’s innings, Neil Walker’s plate appearances, etc.), plus Chance Adams was called up two days ago, and that adds to the luxury tax payroll. Even with all that, they have plenty of room to get under the threshold. Blum says the Red Sox ($238.4M payroll) and Nationals ($203.9M) are the only teams over the luxury tax threshold this year. The Dodgers, like the Yankees, trimmed payroll this year to get under the threshold.
