This Week on the Blog
Alright, Yanks and Giants both won last night and Vitali Kravstov went off in his first U20 Game. Not bad. Now let's take a look at this week.
Yankees: JA Happ is outpitching all of the Yankee mid-season starters since David Cone. That's a frequency of 23 years. Something to think about. Short season teams end their seasons over the next few days, and a few of them might move up for the last ten days of the short season teams. The rest will either head to Tampa for instructs or head to the DR for Dominican Instructs. Boone has been problematic, particularly with his lineups and his feel for the pitching staff. But there have been big injuries to crucial players and he'll probably get a new pitching coach and perhaps some other new coaches next season,
Giants: The Giants have to start making cuts this week, and will play their final game, against the Pats, on August 30th. That game could feature the final battle between Davis Webb and Kyle Lauletta. In fact, in fairness, Lualetta should get a chance to run with the ones early in the game. All that said, and perhaps even more importantly, other teams will start making their cuts, too, and the Giants have the #2 pick in the waiver order - so should really be able to swap out some talent between now and the regular season. In last night's game Evan Engram was concussed and Rhett Ellison got poked in the eye. Those are both scary as you can recall what a poke in the eye did to our old C Brian Williams. Rings of harmony around those two.
Knicks: The Knicks are up in Westchester with their super psyched Coach. Hopefully, the culture is conforming to winning expectations and demands. Courtney Lee's name came up as a trade piece in the past few days and it's unknown if that's real or just his agent trying to market him. Maybe they can get something done there.
Rangers: Vitali Kravstov continues to crush. Yesterday, against Sweden and Ranger a couple of other Ranger kids, Kravstov had a goal, and primary asssist on another goal, and scored again in the shoootout. Impressive. In other news the Rangers still haven't made a trade since the draft. It's been a pretty slow trade season all around the NHL. Perhaps it will pick up as camps open next month,
So there we are. The Yanks need to keep winning, the Giants need to stay healthy and make good roster/waiver decisions. The Knicks need to keep doing what they're doing and the Rangers can stand pat as long as the kids like Kravstov keep improving. Have a great week.

ANDUJAR!!!!
GARDY!!!!
Quality start with 9K's!
Happ now 5-0.
50-5 when they get a quality start. Best in history.
@BryanHoch
"He's able to make adjustments day in and day out, every single day. It's a veteran type of approach. It's awesome to see him on a daily basis. He's an insanely good hitter." - Aaron Hicks, on Miguel Andujar

Some fans don’t appreciate how uniquel his hit tool is. He stays and plays somewhere.
I was ready to throw him in a trade last year, until a scout said he had "Hank Aaron wrists." That's about the highest praise a scout can give to a hitter. That I do not trade.
Gardner may be about to go on one of his weeklong hot streaks and everyone will be pining for him to be the starting left fielder in '19. Brace yourselves.
Can't believe Stanton isn't over .900 OPS for the season.
His OPS has progressed from .737 in April to 1.100 in August.
If Bird isn’t right physically, he needs to tell them.
Bird is such a better hitter than this when he's right.
Gray still has the stuff.
AAA stuff against a AAA team.
Yeah but if he got rocked it would have been horrible for his confidence.
He will go to another team in the offseason ad do well again.
If he goes elsewhere and does well, was it simply not being able to handle NYC, or were the coaches not able to help him? I hope it's just the former.

Coach.
Rhett Ellison
“Migraines (with Ellison), I guess it was,” said Shurmur. “He’s fine. He’s better today.”
Although originally it was reported Ellison left with blurred vision and an eye injury -- one he promised to see the eye doctor about -- it turns out the tight end was simply dealing with a case of migraines. After resting up last night, Ellison returned to the facility in fine shape and should be fine moving forward.
So cording to ESPN they asked Sanchez to get in shape when he started his rehab and he has lost 10 to 15 pounds.
The pressure on Bird seems to be heating up. Did they ever consider sending him down? They failed to do that with Gray when they had a chance, maybe they just don’t have the guts. In any event, it may benefit both players.
Adams...reliever...that’s just what they do.
Jones to the Vikings for a 7th round pick. They really have OL to spare? Or maybe enough meh ones and not enough good ones
$3m cap space gained.
20 pitches but no runs
Incremental improvement by Sevy. Some way still to go.
I think Sevy will snap back on, soon.

Is Berry a better pr options than Wade?
Probably not.
Venus de Milo had a better feel for pitching than Boone/Rothschild
Defense didnt help either.
I don’t agree with sitting Walker right now even for a game.

"He's had two bullpen outings now where he's gone a couple of innings (and) they've been OK," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday. "I think we want to see him get at least another one down there."
If Sheffield fares well in his next one or two bullpen assignments, he'll probably get his first big-league call-up within the next week to take on a late-season role as long reliever/situational left-hander. Big-league rosters can expand from 25 players on Sept. 1.
"That's one of the conversations we've been having," Boone said. "I don't think anything's been decided for sure yet but something we're talking about certainly in the coming days."
Their luck with BABIP sucks.
Is there any research on slumps induced by being on the precipice-of-a-milestone-HR?
Defense is horrific.
Too many holes. They are not a good team right now.
Maybe it looks totally different in a month.
Unreal...
It’s undeniable that Andujar is a defensive liability, but when you can hit like he can, you live with it. At some point they will make a decision about whether or not he’s a first baseman.
He can get better. George Brett and Wade Boggs were both butchers when they came up.
Hicks!
Boom
Walker walks us off!!!!!!!!!!!
Huge win.
Just had a 4.4 in SoCal.
Everything ok?
Haven't heard of any injuries.
Hope everything is good out there.

Andujar has his defensive issues, for sure, but he really shines on offense thanks to a hard-to-find power/contact combination. He’s sitting on a 16.9% strikeout rate and a .230 ISO at the moment. Only five other qualified hitters can make that claim (Alex Bregman, Mookie Betts, Francisco Lindor, Manny Machado, Jose Ramirez). We’ve seen Andujar hit pretty much everything. Fastballs, breaking balls, pitches up, pitches down, whatever.
So far this season Andujar has 99 batted balls with a 100 mph exit velocity or better — only 28 batters have more — and 57 of those 99 have been fly balls or line drives. Those are damage balls in play. The MLB averages on fly balls and line drives at 100+ mph are a .730 AVG and a 1.091 ISO. Andujar is hitting .754 with a 1.351 ISO on those batted balls. Good things happen when you hit the hard and in the air.
Nothing is easy with this lineup.
More bad babip luck tonight.
Just need to get through the weekend and then Sanchez and hopefully Didi will be back against Oakland on monday.
Frazier begin a rehab today:

Lined a single in his first AB.
I wonder if they upgrade it first base before the deadline
Gary returns Saturday.

Yet when asked if the best of Severino could be reclaimed between now and the wild-card game — which is right up there with getting Aaron Judge healthy and productive again as the biggest Yankee issues the rest of the way — pitching coach Larry Rothschild said: “I definitely think so. If you look back at the history of younger pitchers who pitched as much last year with that kind of increase in innings, including the playoffs, you will often find an eight- to 10-game stretch like we are seeing now [with Severino]. This is not out of the norm.”
Since the turn of the century, starters such as Mark Mulder, John Lackey, Justin Verlander, Jon Lester, Derek Holland and Yordano Ventura all followed a big step up in innings that included the playoffs in their early 20s with a period in the following year in which they pitched poorly. For example, Verlander, a power righty like Severino, moved from 130 innings between the minors and majors in 2005 to 207 2/3 innings including the playoffs in 2006 in his age-23 season. He had a 10-start, 5.86 ERA glitch from June 29-Aug. 22 within a season in which he had a 3.66 ERA overall.
Severino went from 151 1/3 innings between the minors and majors (and starting and relief) in 2016 to 209 1/3 innings including the postseason last season in his age-23 campaign.
When Gleyber shows right CF power, he’s locked in.
Bad Happ.
Nice base-running by Hicks.
ugh
Yes, they have a bunch of injuries but they should not be this bad.
Some guys should be playing their way off this team after the season.
