Justus Sheffield to the Pen?

Right around game time last night, the news broke that Justus Sheffield was being moved to the pen, so the Yanks could call him up in September for the same purpose. Anyone who remember the Joba rules will be sickened by this plan. Sheffield was cruising lately, until his last start, then gave up one run in two innings in his first relief appearance. With CC out the move to make would have been to add Justus to the 40 (they had and still have an open spot) and given him 2 starts while CC was out and see what was there.  Meanwhile, the plan is to start Cessa again, and totally distrupt the 22 year old's routine. Justus, Chance Adams and Michael King are all better bets than Cessa at this point, and this is what they come up with?  I know King doesn't have to be added to the 40 till after next season, but the point of prospects isn't to keep them in the minors beyond their need to be there. It's to get them ready and get them in there.

In good news, Gary Sanchez is starting rehab tomorrow, Clint Frazier has started baseball activities again and Johnny Lasagna is starting for Trenton tonight.

It’s a very important reason why Cashman‘s record at developing ion starters is so abysmal. Even if someone wants to argue that he had no choice because he was pressured from above with Joba, if he doesn’t have enough standing now to prevent this, he should quit.

OTOH, Loáisiga and German may be able to help in the pen

And because they always scramble for pitching, Austin in McKinney were debt packing. I don’t think it was totally unforeseeable at the time of the trades that they might be needed at some point this season.

Hardly surprising, but good man:

“Pretty embarrassed about what my dad put on there,” Austin, whose father deleted both tweets, told The Star Tribune. “I didn’t know about it until somebody sent me a picture of it. I told him immediately to take it down. It’s embarrassing and should never happen.”

I don't think Sheffield makes the rotation come playoffs. He's not starting over Severino/Happ/Tanaka/CC....If he can be a multi-inning weapon and get a taste for the big leagues, there's nothing wrong with that. I personally prefer to break in young starters out of the pen to let them gain some confidence by only having to go through a few batters / lineup once and not having to pace themselves.

I don’t have a problem with it either. Then again, I don’t think Sheffield will be in the organization come next Opening Day, so...

I just don't trust the major league pitching and bullpen coaches at all.

I guess it worked with Sevy sort of, but he’s an extraordinary talent.

And part of the reason it hasn’t worked is that because of Mo they overvalue, or have overvalued, late inning relievers. We’ve seen it with Joba, Hughes, Betances.

Next year’s rotation:
Sev
Tanaka
Corbin
Happ
Sheffield or a young starter who has a great ST

This season has demonstrated they don’t have the depth to trade multiple prospects for a starter.

They had the depth to, there just wasn't a target worth using it to get.

At 4:59 PM, Blogger Rich said...

But they have so many holes: OF, 1B, BUC

Torres is their best SS.

At 5:07 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

They have young starters at 1B, C and RF, there was no way to guess they'd all miss lots of time. They had Frazier as depth but he got hurt, Tyler who they traded for Lance, Billy who they traded and a bunch more they don't want to try.

Torres is better at turning the DP. Time to trade Didi.

Boone has no feel for the pitching staff.

I don't think it's "feel" so much as it is resignation. They aren't catching the Sox with a billion injuries to nurse themselves through, so they're hoping they can get everyone healthy and fresh for the postseason. Or at least, they probably feel like that's their only chance to make a run at this point.

Phil is right, there wasn't a pitcher out there worth using that depth to acquire. Hopefully that'll change in the offseason.

Rich, your proposed rotation doesn't exactly inspire confidence. What is Corbin in the American League, and can he pitch in NYC without it affecting him mentally, as it seems to have done with Gray? I think Severino will be fine, but it's a bit concerning that it's likely going to take him going to Pedro Martinez yet again to work through his issues, since apparently his own team can't figure them out. I've always been a believer in Tanaka and remain one, but given the inconsistency, I think it's a mistake counting on him as anything more than a No. 4 starter at this point. They need to do better than Happ. Sheffield I'm not convinced is a future ace, which is why I want him dealt for one.

They may need another option at 1B. They need a better back up catcher. They traded McKinney knowing one OF injury could cause a problem.

Mike, The rotation had is been a problem for virtually all of Cashman‘s tenure.

I still think you have to develop it and I would be patient until they do

You fix first base by signing Machado to play third, shifting Andujar to first and sending Bird down to work on his swing. The only real "fix" for the BUC situation would be getting Gary Sanchez back. BUCs are BUCs because they aren't good enough to start, so there's not much chance a guy good enough to start is going to come to the Yankees to sit on the bench.

The Yankees need to search far and wide this offseason, including internationally, to accumulate top-tier pitching talent. Giving that talent coaches who get guys to perform better than their mean would also be ideal.

That’s one way, and I mentioned that this morning on another blog, but there are alternatives, like Harper, or sticking with Bird.

I think they have to explore back up catcher because Romine can’t cut it and mostly defensively.

If they’re going to stick with Rothschild, they’re always going to have problems.

Cashman has some real blind spots and they are costly.

If there is not improvement with Sanchez behind the plate, we will see Romine late in the game if it's close for defense especially in the playoffs.

Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez will begin a rehab assignment on Thursday, GM Brian Cashman told SNY Contributor Jim Duquette Tuesday on MLB Network Radio.

Cashman added that there is also "work behind the scenes" going on regarding Sanchez' defense.

That should be going on with every player they have because poor fundamentals have been a team wide problem.

Now, that said, I do believe Andujar has the potential be a perennial All-Star hitter. Right now he’s sporting a .227 ISO and a 17.2% strikeout rate. Here are the last ten players to put up a .220+ ISO and a sub-18.0% strikeout rate while qualifying for the batting title at age 23:

Francisco Lindor, 2017: .232 ISO and 12.9 K%
Manny Machado, 2016: .239 ISO and 17.2 K%
Hanley Ramirez, 2007: .230 ISO and 13.5 K%
Prince Fielder, 2007: .330 ISO and 17.8 K%
Miguel Cabrera, 2006: .229 ISO and 16.0 K%
David Wright, 2006: .220 ISO and 17.1 K%
Albert Pujols, 2003: .308 ISO and 9.5 K%
Aramis Ramirez, 2001: .235 ISO and 15.3 K%
Eric Chavez, 2001: .252 ISO and 16.4 K%
Andruw Jones, 2000: .238 ISO and 13.7 K%

So what explains Cole Hamels, a pitching coach the National League, something else?

I’m not blaming anyone, but Robertson and cannot be relied on anymore and they need stop using him in high leverage situations. If they don’t stop, then I blame them.

I’m liking the walks by Stanton.

I have no problem that Boone says performance will determine PT with Bird/Voit, but the same should apply to Gardner when the OF gets healthy. Yes, he got a big hit late, but he has been terrible.
