This Week on the Blog

Yanks pulled one out last night, and have to start winning easy again.  The Giants have to make their cuts today. The Knicks are off and chilling and the Rangers are off, but some of their prospects are playing. Let's take a look at what's to come.

Yankees: MLB expands rosters today and the Yanks have called up LHP Stephen Tarpley,  UT Tyler Wade, Cessa and Chance Adams. Tarpley is a kid who was a pop-up prospect last year and now he's getting the all over Justus Sheffield. Meanwhile, Andrew McCutchen should make a his Yankee debut today, and I can't remember if they were at 39 on the 40 or if they'll have to cut someone. Since they cut someone for Hechevarria, I suppose we'll see another cut (unless Cutch was already added).  Yanks can keep adding players, but that don't have to do it all at once.

UPDATE: McCutchen is batting first and Gardy is batting ninth! And El Gary is batting 5th!

UPDATE: The Yanks have recalled Johnny Lasagna!

Giants: It's cutdown day. This is a brutal day for those cut, and a day of massive gratitude for those who make teams. The Giants new regime has already cut Anthony Adams and Mark Herzlich, as well  as over 20 others. They have to get to 53 by 4pm. Not sure when the waiver period begins, but the Giants have the #2 claim until game 4, so they should be able to improve. Hopefully, it will be by way of OL, S, CB, and WR. We'll see how they do. And we'll have more on them as they do.

Rangers: Some of the overseas Ranger prospects are starting their regular season and couple of the major junior kids are starting their preseasons.  Both RW Riley Hughes and D Joey Keane, decided not to go to college, and have been lighting it up. Nico Gross is also playing, and Vitaly Kravstov was named Best Forward in the U20 Four Nations Tourney. Taverse City tournament will be later this month, then Qunn's first Camp will open.

Knicks: A lot of the Knicks have been working all summer, but camp begins toward the end of September.  Let's hope their hard work pays off with wins.

So there it it, big day for the Yanks and Giants, and more of the same for the Knicks and Rangers.   Have a great one!

McCutcheon leading off. I would bat Torres 3rd. He is a much much much better hitter than Hicks. Probably a handedness and veteran-ness myopia.

While Sanchez was out the Austin Romine/Kyle Higashioka catching tandem hit .201/.258/.350 in 231 plate appearances and opponents went 43-for-56 (77%) stealing bases. The overall team ERA also went from 3.43 to 3.72 during Sanchez’s absence. It has not been pretty behind the plate the last few weeks. I’m looking forward to Gary being back and him getting back to being the player he was last year.

Hopefully we get August Gary for the rest of the year.

Hits and runs, please ...

Don’t you just love it when some dude with like a 5 ERA shuts down this lineup.

Cutch gets hit and is on base for his first time.

Gary's BABIP luck still sucks.

It was great to have the roster closer to whole again, although Cashman’s comments about Chapman are concerning.

The #Giants claimed DE Mario Edwards off waivers from the #Raiders, source said. Oakland shopped the former second-round draft pick, but couldn’t strike a deal. Now, a fresh start.

Boone’s absence demonstrating that Rothschild is the problem.

At 11:31 AM, Blogger Rich said...

And Kahnle in a big spot. Ugh.

Let's comeback and win this.

Voit!

At 1:54 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Cashman needs to face the truth about Rothschild. In fact, his ML pitching coaches have sucked for his entire 20 year tenure.

At 3:16 PM, Blogger Rich said...

What we learned:
1) Lynn must be out of the rotation NOW;
2) Kahnle’s lost season should be over;
3) Not PHing Stanton...WHAT?
4) Debuting Tarpley in a big spot was scary stupid.
5) Pitching deployment/bp management is an important reason why they aren’t closer to 1B.

Railriders clinched the Wild Card! With all the turnover they've had this year, that's impressive.

If this NJ.com article is right they apply analytics completely mechanically, which seems dumb:

Aaron Judge was heading to the batting cage with a bat! According to Meredith.

At 2:31 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Yes!

Cole first out of the pen?

At 2:37 PM, Blogger Rich said...

We saw yesterday that this poor decision making isn’t Boone; it’s organuzational.

At 2:45 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Judge took 25 swings at a T.

At 2:54 PM, Blogger Rich said...

That’s good. Their pitching decisions are not.

At 3:09 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Using Green now with a biggest deficit is indefensible.

At 3:37 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I keep waiting for the cream to rise to the top and this team to play up to its capabilities but I’m becoming more and more skeptical it’s gonna happen this year. Need reenforcements both on offense and on the pitching staff, but you can’t really address those areas in a major way until the offseason.

At 4:04 PM, Blogger Rich said...

The talent, when everyone was healthy, covered up some poor organizational thinking. Boone is merely the most visible manifestation of it.

At 4:13 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Today was an example of letting Cole decide a key game. Laughable.

At 4:33 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Gardner leading off Torres batting ninth. These people are lost.

At 9:12 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

The offense sucks. I know Judge is hurt, but my gawd, they shouldn't be this bad.

At 5:50 AM, Blogger Rich said...

It’s crazy how bad they can be for long stretches.

I read that until last nights win they hadn’t beaten a team in playoff contention since mid July, Cleveland.

At 7:45 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Can I just say when I said the offense sucks I wasn't referring to Hicks?

At 10:06 AM, Blogger Rich said...

I think if they were less focused on launch angle he would hit for a higher average, and that’s my preference, but he has had a good season

At 2:27 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Biggest game of the season.

At 7:34 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Do they lead the league in LOB?

At 7:48 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I think we can forget about good Severino coming back this season. Once again, it will be up to someone not working in the organization to right him this offseason. Unbelievable that no one has figured this out by now.

At 7:49 PM, Blogger Rich said...

If he isn’t hurt, they need to have a different pitching coach look at him.

At 7:51 PM, Blogger Rich said...

This isn’t what I was expecting.

At 7:59 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Is “passed ball Tourette’s” a thing?

At 8:03 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Manager Aaron Boone said Frazier (concussion) suffered a setback and will likely miss the remainder of the season, Marc Carig of The Athletic reports

At 8:09 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I realize they aren’t gonna fire Boone after one season, but someone please convince me the entire staff surrounding him shouldn’t be let go? In between their inability to fix Severino and the regression of Sanchez, what exactly are they doing?

At 8:45 PM, Blogger Rich said...

It’s a mess.

At 3:27 AM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Samchez being Sanchez. At least he took ownership of those 2 balls that got by him.

Should DH in the playoffs.

At 4:57 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Why is Sev’s ERA so much lower with Sanchez? Why does Sanchez throw out more runners?

Where I would agree is he has to hit.

But the issue isn’t Sanchez. Their offense can’t be this bad because of Judge and Didi.

Their use of pitchers is awful. Cole with a 3 run lead but Holder with a 6 run lead.

They need leadership from the top or this team will continue to be toast as they have looked since the Baltimore sweep.

At 5:06 AM, Blogger Rich said...

And IF (because who knows) Cashman isn’t having another pitching coach work with Sev, it’s flat out incompetence.

At 5:32 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Not lead, deficit

At 8:16 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Let’s not act like Sanchez is the only one struggling on defense. Andujar and Torres have as well, and while part of that is that they’re rookies, is there any indication they’re receiving adequate coaching?

NYP

Girardi, a former catcher himself, believes he has a solution.

“To me, over the next four weeks I’d try to fix the base. It’s his base,” Girardi said Thursday on MLB Network’s “High Heat” with Chris Russo.

“His left knee collapses and he’s not in a position to catch some of these balls and block some of these balls. If they can fix that, it’s a no-brainer.”

At 6:40 PM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

I am sure Girardi suggested that to him when he managed him.

SSS with Sanchez having a lower ERA with Romine.

I am sure if you ask the Yankee pitchers candidly, they would say they prefer to throw to Romine.

Romine has a 28% CS rate
Sanchez has a 25% CS rate although he does have a tremendous arm

https://nypost.com/2018/09/06/ranking-the-yankees-catching-options-for-the-wild-card-game/

1. Austin Romine

2. Gary Sanchez

3. Kyle Higashioka

At 7:13 AM, Blogger Rich said...

That’s moronic

At 7:16 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Remember, sports writers are some of the stupidest people out there, and isn’t it a little revealing that they say nothing about Rothschild should go or they’re catching coaches?
