Yanks Acquire Sonny Gray

Okay, this is just breaking but the Yanks have acquired Sonny Gray for Fowler, Mateo, and Kaprielian.  Fowler has the injury, so and Kap is coming back from TJS.  So the physicals won't be an issue. Fowler was a late bloomer and his injury is a scary one.  I am believer in Mateo, so that's tough.  And I'm a big fan of James Kaprielian but the TJS kind of screws up his clock, and Clarke Schmidt has the same TJS issue, but is on a different clock.  They hold onto Florial, and the rest, with Florial appearing to be the longterm plan for CF, as he should be.

So Sonny Gray, is a smaller version of Kaprielian and Schmidt, but healthier and with MLB success.  He's the type of pitcher we are now leaning toward drafting, and could be a big contributor with Sevy and Monty as the transition to a young rotation. When his curveball is on, he can be elite.

As I said, this makes more sense than the Rutherford deal

This almost a best case scenario. Kaps health was creating a problem for next year's rotation. So we now have that spot covered and still have and bunch of candidates for the next two spots.

This is a great trade. Keeping Florial was key. Hated to lose Mateo though.

Problem I see with Kap, who I have high expectations for, is he's pitched like 30 innings over 2 years prior to missing all of this year, so I feel like he is someone that would take a while to build up.

I mentioned this in the other thread about Otani; He can come over after this season and would be subject to the IFA bonus pools, just like the 16 year old Dominicans, Venezuelans, etc. since he's under 25. If Yanks got some indication that he is indeed coming over, getting these bonus space could be huge in allowing them to outbid the competition since most other teams they'd be fighting for have max limits (Dodgers, Padres) or have spent it all (Red Sox, etc).

Does anyone know the maximum they can pay him?

It will be interesting to see whether it's a six man rotation or Montgomery to the pen. My guess is the latter.

Girardi's over managing the pen does scare me a great deal.

I was Cashman would see that he's holding his plan back.

If everyone is healthy I would say this is fair value. As it stands, if I'm an A's fan I'm livid at Beane.

Well, to be fair the Beane, we don't know what other teams offered, and we don't know what they know about Gray's health

True, and it's also unlikely Gray's value gets any higher than it is now.

All of the international money has to be about positioning themselves for Otani.

According to Jesse Sanchez @ MLB, Yanks now have $3.5MM in IFA money left. By far the most available and all can be spent on Otani, if he decides to come over.

Maybe I'm asking these rhetorically:

How long would he have to wait to to come over to get the really big bucks in his initial contract?

Alternatively, how long wounds he have to wait to get a new contract with bigger bucks once he is here?

He would have to wait until after his age 25 season to come over and be in a posting situation, similar to Tanaka, so 2 more additional years in Japan after this one.

If he came this year, he would be under same scenario as any IFA but he most likely is on the 25 man roster, so potentially 5 years for true FA, otherwise it could be 3 years and then an extension to buy out arbitration.

One thing to note about Otani, he tried to sign with MLB teams out of HS but MLB said no because of their agreement with Nippon. He wants to come play here so $$ might not be a major factor, but it definitely doesn't hurt.

Thanks.

He has said he doesn't care about money and just wants to pitch here. Just curious, does anyone know if that money carries over to the next IFA period (starts July 2, 2018) if Otani decides not to come over?

Andrew Marchand:
"Yankees first baseman Greg Bird (ankle) is feeling much better after his surgery. He is expected to have his stitches out on Tuesday. He thinks he will need to hit and field for a few days and then he could go on a rehab. He seems as if Bird could be back with Yankees at some point in mid to late August."

I do not believe the $ carries over but there are always late blooming prospects too and Cubans.. I will try to confirm.

Darvish to Dodgers, wonder what they gave up.

Pretty clear now they consider Florial close to untouchable.

At 2:13 PM, Blogger Rich said...

They may have been willing to give him up for Quintana.

This really is a gamblers trade, but as I said there seems to be risk parity.

If Fowler and Kap fully recover, Beane wins, but look at Victor Cruz. I haven't seen the same explosion as he has recovered from a similar injury.

When I read today that was the same injury as Cruz it make me want to hold onto Florial even more.
