This Week on the Blog

This week saw the Giants add some roster guys, the Yanks give Greg Bird the first base job, the Rangers blow some games, and the Knicks move closer to the lottery.  This week should be interesting.  Let's take a look.

Yanks: In 8 days the Yanks will start their 2017 season. It will be the most exciting start to a season since we got Matsui and Contreras, for a variety or reasons. However; before the season gets going, they have some roster decisions to make.  They headed off prolonged controversy by sending down Gleyber Torres the other day, but either Kozma or Torreys or Wade could start the season at SS while DiDi is down.  What's more, Montgomery has looked the best of the 4th/5th starter candidates, but he's not on the 40.  So they might have to make a move, but maybe not right away because they don't need a 5th starter for the first two series.  Warren was not good today, Cessa was sent down, and Cash just said Severino will be a starter with the Yanks or in AAA. There could also be a trade coming.

Of course, the most excitement is probably over Bird, Gary and Judge.  And it should be,  Bird hit his 7th bomb of the Spring and his OBP is over .500.  Judge and Sanchez have also been impressive.  And interestingly, Cash did say he expects to see Gleyber Torres up with the big team some time this summer.

Giants: The Giants are in a protracted stalemate with Hankins.  They did move some money around, reducing the bases of both Dwayne Harris and Shane Vereen, so maybe they will get Hankins locked up this week and then  focus on the Draft.  They've had some kids come in and visit already and they've been at all the pro-days.

Rangers: The reason why I didn't want to extend AV was that he has a habit of playing the Tanner Glasses of the world over good young players, like Pavel Buchnevich, and it inarguably has cost him games. He did it this week, and they just didn't score enough without Buch. I'm not sure they will make it out of the first round this year, with their challenged Defense and the coaches unwillingness to play all of his best players.

Knicks: The Knicks continue their march to the lottery. Today, Noah, was suspended for the first 20 games of next year for taking an over the counter supplement.  I always liked him, but he hasn't been the guy he was in awhile and certainly not with the Knicks.  Looks like they'll be picking 4th or 5th in June.

So there it is, interesting week for the Yanks, business as usual for everyone else.  Have a great week!

Lawyer posted in the previous thread Warren and Montgomery should be the 4/5 starters.

I'd go with Severino and Montgomery, personally. In Severino's case, it's time to see what they have in him once and for all. If he can start, then he needs to figure it out at the major-league level. In Montgomery's case, he's earned a spot based on his performance and his upside.

Bottom line, they need some of these young arms to actually reach their potential, not simply be relegated to the bullpen because they were failed starters.

Ok that's fine too.

The Knicks are morons.

Thinking about it, I like yours more.

Are they really going to start Hicks over Judge, really? You fall in love with tools and you become a fool.

I think there's a life lesson in that last sentence, LINJ.

Can they be this stupid?

If so it shows how having a payroll advantage and cover up being morons.

But I'll take me over and think that they are that stupid.

Edit: aren't that stupid

This seems like one of those "so dumb it can't possibly be true" rumors, and usually those end up being false. I'd like to think the Yankees don't want either player getting comfortable.

The owner said he wanted to see him start. That should end it in light of the facts.

So yes. I agree on the result.

If it is what ultimately ends up happening, then that's a pretty serious mistake. It sends the wrong message to your prospects, and it also indicates that, no matter how strong the farm system becomes, team management has no idea what to do with the pieces.

And they might have the worst outfield in baseball.

Severino is the fourth starter, Mitchell will pitch out of the pen to start the season. Montgomery likely to AAA, but they don't need a No. 5 until midway through April so that's still a possibility.

Refs was sent down, which probably means Judge is on the roster.

See, I was willing to believe that they weren't that stupid and I was right. Props.

Yep. They likely intended for him to start in RF all along, and the stuff about Hicks was probably meant to make him believe it was a close competition so he wouldn't get comfortable.

And again, I have no problem with Hicks getting at-bats, as long as it's not at Judge's expense.
