Judge "Wins" RF Job

This morning we found out that Aaron Judge has Babe Ruth's old job.  I don't know what all the Hicks nonsense was, other than that the Yanks might have been trying to showcase and market him, because he is not part of the solution.

In other news, Severino has been named 4th starter and it's a welcome relief that they are seemingly not going to Joba him.  Interestingly, they also sent down Chad Green to keep him as a starter, so they really are walking the walk as far as keeping their best arms in the rotation as long as they possibly can. I don't know what that means for Brian Mitchell who appears to be starting the season in the pen.  He's a guy who has hit 100 in starts, so he could be pretty lethal out of the pen.

They seem to want to keep Pete Kozma, though he doesn't have a spot on the 40, and would you really want to DFA anyone you could sign Pete Kozma?  I just looked it over, and there's no one I'd cut for Kozma.  Maybe they're working on a trade.  They made a mistake when they took Romine over Higgy for backup catcher.  Higgy's two years younger and just better.

Just three more days.

So the next step to climb out of the recent run of mediocrity is to trade Gardner and/or Ellsbury whenever/if ever an even somewhat reasonable offer comes up, even if it means eating salary.

The same with Headley as soon as Torres is ready.

And if Pineda pitches well, I'd look to move him too.

Here's an article from Pinstripe Alley that sort of highlights the team's fundamental problem with holding onto the Hicks types too long: http://www.pinstripealley.com/2017/3/30/15116234/yankees-brian-cashman-aaron-hicks-aaron-judge-drew-ackley-mitre

I think there are things that Cashman does well and there are things that he does not so well. He loves tools. He compared hin to Jackie Bradley Jr. So maybe, but that is such an unusual developmental path.

He is in a pretty good situation here right now. He can spell left field and centerfield and if he hits like Cashman thinks he can, he can earn more playing time and show that he is that. I doubt it, but it's the best way to handle things until the high-end outfielders like Frazier, Mateo etc. (and maybe McKinney) are ready.

And that ties into what I said above. Those two positions have seen a decline in recent years and maybe Hicks can help reverse that.

cant the 40 man roster spot come from putting Austin on the 60 day DL? No chance Austin comes back by April 15th which I believe is his 60 day mark.

Too bad about Refs not making the team, but he needed to hit better than he did in spring training. I can't say he didn't get the opportunity either. Maybe he will catch fire in AAA, but I fear he is still blocked unless Hicks bats zero or the Yanks find actaker for Gardiner or Ellsbury.

The more I think about it, the more I believe this whole "down to the wire" stuff was just as much about Hicks as it was about Judge not getting too comfortable. If they make Hicks think he barely lost out on being a starter, then he might still have a bit of a chip on his shoulder going into the season. I believe when he was with the Twins there was question about his motivation, so this could play into that.

As for JBJ, check out his monthly splits and his BABIP. No way he doesn't come crashing back down to earth, IMO, so for Cashman to invoke his name, is he sure JBJ wasn't just a flash in the pan?

What I hope AJ does is focus on making good contact at least until he gets the hang of the bigs. That was what he did in the minors. For a while, he had a good BA and low K's and the "experts" were saying he couldn't hit pro pitching for power, and then the HR's came.

I'm a little surprised Heller didn't make the 25 man roster
