Yanks: The Gurriel Situation

Today, Yulieski Gurriel became a free agent and will begin workouts soon with the idea of signing somewhere by August 1. Yuli can play second, third and outfield, and is thought to compare to Jeff Kent as a hitter, though he's said to be a more flexible and athletic defender.  And that's not the only reason the Yanks who have been trotting out a vastly dimished Chase Headly for the past year and a half should be interested.  It's Yuli's 22 year old brother that should make this a no brainer for the Yankees.  Lourdes Gurriel is a Shortstop and OF, who can also really hit.  He hasn't been cleared yet, but if he is cleared before turning 23 in October, he's unlikely to sign because he doesn't want pool money if he can get FA money on his 23rd birthday.

In fact, Lourdes could turn 23 during the Yankee offseason and if he is a real SS, they could sign him and have the entire offseason to trade DiDi.

So, if these guys really are what the scouts believe they are, they shouldn't let what they have block them from signing them.  And they should especially jump on Yuli if he'll be the key to Lourdes.   Yanks don't get as many shots at comensation other than money guys anymore.  That's largely because of Hal's Cuban Embargo.  But these guys could upgrad the roster, without costing picks or minor leaguers.  Why not?
