Yanks Post Draft Stuff Pt.1
First off, it's Monday and I still can't believe the Yanks got Blake Rutherford. This was just an amazing turn of events. If they get him in, which I believe is fully expected, he'll be their best first rounder since Jeter. And he literally should have gone no lower than #6 where Jeter was picked. As I've mentioned there are a bunch of people out here who think Blake is better than Moniak and has been great for a longer period of time. What's more vitrtually everyone will concede Blake is the better hitter. And Moniak went first overall. This is just a delightful stroke of luck. Gerrit Cole, who they were willing to back up the truck for under the old rules, had a chance to be that next elite pick, but alas. Signing Blake will change the system, and has to be done. Btw, I don't think they've found the right comps for this kid yet.
In other good news, the college guys seem to be rushing to Tampa to take their physicals and sign. Notably, Nick Nelson of the nice projection has already signed. He's been a two way player in college, and they expect his plus stuff to really play up now that he'll be a pitcher only.
I'll have some more draft stuff as the week and weeks move on, but if you're a Yankee fan, you should be thanking your lucky stars, they got Blake.

It's an important reason why you keep your pick. If they had in 2009, they may have gotten Trout.
We would not have gotten Trout, he was #1 guy on their board and only selected second to lower the cost.
Without Teix, we don't win 2009 WS.
We had Trout as #1 on our board.
What we're missing now, and the three first round picks we gave up two years ago to go on that unfortunate shopping spree.
And without a pick, lost in compensation for Teixeira, they lost any chance of drafting him
Without factoring Trout, I wouldn't trade 8 years of up and down performance for one championship.
I think what Billy is saying is that if the Angels didn't have two picks in row, they would have taken Trout first of those two, instead of second. Though that might be revisionism. Also, had the Yanks been sitting there, Trout could have told the Angels to pass, as sometimes happened back before this CBA when that draft took place.
I realize that, but without a pick, it's hard to say we would have drafted him, so yes, you're right.
And it's not revisionist history, since it was discussed on other blogs, that not signing Teix and waiting a year for Holliday, made a lot of sense in real time.
Phil is correct, sorry for not articulating it properly. If we had the pick, Angels were selecting Trout, he was #1 on their big board, as well as ours. I was there in the room at the time when this went down, so we can stop thinking we had any chance of drafting Trout.
I agree that losing the 3 1sts for signing McCann, Beltran & Ellsbury is what really hurt this franchise, not the Teix signing. If you recall, Boston was on the verge of signing Teix before we swooped in. There was ZERO indication at the time of the signing that he would become the player he has today, which is low average / high obp with slugging - he was an all around player and was ELITE defensively.
What he brought on the defensive end alone was at least 5 win upgrade over what we had for the previous 5+ years in Giambi. So while his offensive production fluctuated, his glove alone was very valuable to our lackluster defensive IF.
When we signed Tex, he was an ascendant guy who was absolutely on a Hall of Fame track. Unfortunately, just like Giambi he stopped using the whole field as soon as he became a Yankee, so his BA's went to crap. And he geared up for fastball, which started making him looks silly on offspeed and breaking stuff.
The three first 2 years ago really disrupted what has become a way better drafting machine than many realize.
